Popular With The PA

via Chris Stevenson of the Ottawa Sun,

There are some players who probably care less about what’s going on their union than some fans do. With Ted Saskin on paid vacation, who’s running the union? “Maybe the lady who runs the gift room,” Leafs forward Mike Peca told reporters in Toronto. “That’s the person the guys go see the most, anyway, to get the free stuff.”

Exactly!

from Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun,

Who cares?
Who thinks hockey fans really give a damn?
Turns out the guy who was running the NHL Players’ Association might have been a bit dodgy.
Word is he may have done a thing or two “on the down low,” including the unauthorized monitoring of their e-mails.
Shocker.

A Vote For Orr

from Allan Muir at Sports Illustrated,

Whoever takes the job must be someone who enjoys the respect of everyone in the union, and who understands the players’ priorities. Ideally, it will be someone who can build some bridges and get the players back on the same page.
That guy might be Bobby Orr.
Would Orr want that kind of aggravation? He hasn’t said. And he’s certainly not the sort of man who’d campaign for a job while someone else was still warming the chair. But his candidacy would boast a lot of favorable factors.

The Chelios Factor

via the Detroit Free Press,

Does Chelios feel vindicated?
“I’m not looking for vindication,” Chelios said. “Like I said all along, I want what’s best for the game and the players in this union.
“When this investigation comes out and every player is aware of what happened, if anything, it’s going to pull everyone together. That’s a guarantee.”

I recall when Chelios first brought this to the forefront, 90% of the MSM, bloggers, etc., were against him and thought he was just blowing smoke.
In the “Forget What I Wrote Earlier” media world, I wonder how they will spin this?

NHLPA head Ted Saskin Suspended by Players

From Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,

Embattled NHL Players’ Association executive director Ted Saskin has been suspended with pay, after a unanimous vote by the union’s team player representatives.
A majority of the NHLPA’s 30 team player reps late last night participated in an emergency conference call with union staff to discuss allegations first reported by the Star that Saskin inappropriately accessed the private email accounts of players who have opposed his hiring.
Saskin did not participate in the nearly two-hour conference call.

Coming To An End

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

The cozy and unseemly affiliation between the executive director of the union and the people who run the NHL is coming to an end. Saskin is out of time. Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly are out of luck. They’ll have to find a new boy. As if….
Saskin’s departure will not be the end of it, not by a long shot. The group of players led by Chris Chelios, Matt Schneider, Dwayne Roloson, Eric Lindros and now-retired Trent Klatt, will continue to press for information that will prove suspected direct communication between agents and NHL officials during the lockout. If such proof is uncovered, these agents will be decertified, and thus unable to continue to represent NHL players. This is the next bombshell.

Not Looking Good For Saskin

I have limited the NHLPA stories, but this one summarizes what is known…

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail,

The truth may be revealed by Sunday night, when two members of the NHLPA executive — Mike Gartner, director of hockey affairs, and Stu Grimson, associate counsel — convene a conference call for the 30 player representatives (known as the executive council), plus the seven members of the interim executive board, to investigate the matter and decide what happens next.
A small sampling of agents all came to the same basic conclusion regarding Saskin’s future. “He’s done,” said one. Another described Saskin as a “dead man walking.”

Settle It

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

It is difficult to imagine a scenario where Ted Saskin remains as executive director of the NHL players’ association.
The only question, it would seem, is whether there is a move to terminate Saskin, which some are suggesting is the basis for an NHLPA executive committee conference call on Sunday, or whether he resigns voluntarily.

continued... Settle this now.  With the most exciting time of year for hockey fans just around the corner, we want hockey, just hockey.  No court fight headlines, no he said this, just hockey.

More on Ted Saskin and the Email Scandal

From Bruce Dowbiggin at the Calgary Herald,

So far, Saskin has been as responsive as the Sphinx to most of these complaints. When pressed he fell back on the excuse of “previous practices” in the regime of Goodenow. Most of what Saskin and his allies—former president Trevor Linden, some players and a few prominent agents—have said is ridicule for those pesky old varmints such as Chris Chelios who’ve had the temerity to ask “where’s the money?” until they get a good answer. Chelios and Duane Roloson were said to be old and out of touch, reluctant to let a new generation take over the union.
This line worked well in the early days of Chelios’ questioning. Chelios is, after all, a notorious crank. But now that 18 months have passed without any revelations of substance from Saskin, the opposition has grown and reached critical mass.

Decisions For The Players

from Rick Westhead of the Toronto Star,

The beleaguered NHL players union has scheduled an emergency conference call for Sunday night to confirm to some of the league’s senior players that top union executives have been inappropriately accessing player email accounts….
Players are also expected to discuss firing Saskin and Kim, a source told the Star, although that would likely generate wrongful dismissal lawsuits. “The players will have to make a decision on what they want to do,” the source said. “It’s not going to be an easy decision.”
