Pointing At Keenan

from Bill Clement at MSNBC,

Very often the Flames appear confused on defense. On many nights it looks like they are not on the same page. It’s Keenan’s responsibility to make sure Calgary’s defense is organized and has a sound defensive system. But Keenan has never been a system driven coach. He wants emotion, energy, combativeness and competiveness. It’s hard to win in today’s NHL with just those qualities. Teams need a comprehensive defensive system.

Pandolfo Will Miss At Least A Game

from Fire & Ice,

Left wing Jay Pandolfo said he will not play in Friday night’s home game against Montreal because of the “pelvis area” injury he sustained in the third period of Wednesday’s 4-2 win over Dallas. “I won’t be able to play tomorrow,” he said. “It’s disappointing. You never want to be hurt, but, hopefully, it’s not that bad. I think it’s day to day.”

Pandolfo’s ironman man streak will end at 307 consecutive regular season games (the third longest in team history). He last missed a regular season game on Jan. 18, 2003 against Carolina because of a mild concussion (that was the last of four consecutive games he sat out).

Line Of The Day

from Puck-rakers,

Hitchcock was asked if he was planning to “go with Malarchuk” tonight against the Canucks:

“Hey, he wasn’t bad for a guy in the 1970s. I don’t think you’ll see him (Thursday night). It was hard enough to get him out there for practice. He kept holding out for a better deal. We didn’t get it done until right before practice.”

Ranking Iginla on Flames List of Greats

From David Carroll at TSN,

Jarome Iginla is set to become the Flames all-time leader in games played on Thursday when he hits the ice against the Anaheim Ducks.

The 30-year-old is one of the NHL’s biggest stars and has an impressive list of awards and accomplishments. Iginla has won “Rocket” Richard Trophies, a Lester B. Person Award and an Art Ross Trophy.

He can score and, when needed, can mix it up but where does he rank on the list of Flames all-time greats?

continued…

How do you stack Iginla against players like Joe Nieuwendyk, Al MacInnis, Gary Suter, Theo Fleury, Lanny McDonald, Paul Reinhart and Mike Vernon and others?  There’s also a poll available on the TSN front page.

Avery Gets His Retraction

from William Houston of the Globe and Mail,

The FAN590 in Toronto will retract, on air, its report alleging that New York Ranger Sean Avery had ridiculed Toronto Maple Leaf Jason Blake’s fight with cancer during a trash-talking session at the Air Canada Centre on Nov. 10.

In addition to strongly denying the report, Avery also served the radio station with a notice of libel. The Fan’s Howard Berger had quoted a Ranger source saying Avery had alluded to Blake’s chronic leukemia during an exchange at centre ice before the start of the game.

The Trap Works

from the Good, the Bad and the Duthie,

The New York Islanders are clearly Devil-Worshippers. It’s like they took Jersey’s old trap and said “This is too exciting, let’s make it more defensive!” For 40 minutes, they spent more time in their own backyard than my dog. We ran a 30-second clip during our intermission of Ottawa with the puck in its own end. You never saw more than one Islander in the frame.

And sadly it works. The Isles have now scored 2 goals or less in 10 straight games. And they have 5 wins and 11 points to show for it.

Herein lies a major problem for hockey.

Buying Votes

from NHL Digest,

If a fan feels that a player deserves to be in the All-Star Game, the fans should vote accordingly. Fans should not be influenced by the lure of autographed merchandise, tickets and/or other prizes.

It is one thing for creative fans to try to hustle votes, but an entirely different thing for an organization to attempt to essentially buy votes for its players.

What do you think?

The Same Pronger

from the Vancouver Province,

All the guy does is play 28 minutes a night until the playoffs. Then he really gets to work and he kicks it up a notch. He always gets better as the season goes along and his team, no matter what team he plays for, always has a chance to do something in the post-season. He’s so good and has been for so long, he’s just expected to be great every night, every year with no fanfare, unless it’s provided by the opposing crowd.

“He’s been terrific this year again,” says Ducks GM Brian Burke of the defenceman he landed from Edmonton 18 months ago to make a Cup in Anaheim last year a reality. “He’s stepped into the leadership void left by (Scott Niedermayer’s) loss and filled it nicely. He’s always steady, great every night ... just terrific.”
