Top Defensive Core

from Damien Cox of the Toronto Star,

But the main difference in the Ducks may be that the core of the team, its blue-line unit, is now even stronger. The trio of Niedermayer, Chris Pronger and Francois Beauchemin that gobbled up all those minutes in 21 post-season matches last spring has an extra partner this season in veteran Mathieu Schneider.

Together, it may be the NHL’s top defence group.

Ottawa has attractive depth, Detroit has Nicklas Lidstrom and the league’s flashiest defensive numbers while Calgary is getting there with Robyn Regehr and Dion Phaneuf.

But the Ducks’ quartet has talent, pedigree and experience, and you could even argue all four are playing as well as they ever have.

That includes the 38-year-old Schneider, added as a free agent from Detroit in July.

Get Tougher Columbus

from Puck-rakers at the Columbus Dispatch,

The Blue Jackets are a very good group of guys. I wouldn’t say that if it weren’t true. They are, without exception, good guys to deal with, even after brutal losses when nobody would want a microphone stuffed in their face.

On the ice, they’re way too nice, too, and this is unfortunate.

The most recent come-out-of-my-chair moment happened during the St. Louis game on Tuesday, when Nikolai Zherdev was run over by Blues forward David Backes.

Coyotes Have Will To Win

from Dave Strader at PhoenixCoyotes.com,

It’s impossible to overstate what the addition of Ilya Bryzgalov has meant to this team.  As Wayne has stated many times, goaltending wasn’t really an issue in the first six weeks of the season. The team got several strong outings from Auld, Aebischer and Tellqvist…but Bryzgalov brought something that my partner Darren Pang likes to call “presence”. Bryz has presence because of his size, athleticism and attitude. Since Bryz has become a Coyote, the entire team has begun to take on a presence.

Yzerman Goes Into Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun, Y

zerman, who will be inducted into the Ottawa Sports Hall of Fame tomorrow, played another nine seasons, completing his 22-year NHL career with one team….

“It’s obvious he was a great talent and very gifted offensively,” said Senators GM Bryan Murray, who coached Yzerman for a four-season span that ended in 1993.

“He made a commitment to the team that forced him to give up some offence. And he became one of the great captains, one of the great leaders and one of the best two-way players in the game.”

Rangers Not In Panic Mode

from Larry Brooks of the NY Post,

There will be no band-aid deals in which the Blueshirts surrender value for emergency replacements. In other words, Petr Prucha is not being sent to Columbus for David Vyborny.

And here’s a third piece of good news: on Tuesday, with his team needing Jaromir Jagr to be at his best, the captain responded. Jagr is elevating his game as the season progresses; steadily if not necessarily dramatically.

If the Rangers are going anywhere other than home on April 7, they need their best player to be their best player.

Anyone Can Be Benched

from the National Post,

Lest you think Iginla was being picked on during the 3-1 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes, he had company on Tuesday in the second-period doghouse. In fact, personnel from the top two lines—Iginla, Kristian Huselius, Craig Conroy, Owen Nolan, Daymond Langkow and Alex Tanguay, the latter seeing a little more than two minutes of ice time in the middle frame.

The message from head coach Mike Keenan was clear—ice time has to be earned, and his top dogs weren’t earning it against the Desert Dogs.

But he also wanted to acknowledge the job being done by the worker bees on the third and fourth lines, and was looking for a spark from them.

They Used To Be Backups

from Ross McKeon of Yahoo,

It’s interesting to see what has happened this week to Manny Legace and Chris Osgood, a couple of goalies the Detroit Red Wings thought were nothing more than back-ups not long ago.

Legace was named the league’s No. 1 star for the week ending Jan. 6. The St. Louis Blues’ No. 1 man in the net has pretty much been spot on all season, despite playing at less than 100 percent.

Osgood has played so well that not only has he emerged as the go-to guy in Detroit, but the Red Wings awarded the 35-year-old with a three-year contract extension on Wednesday.

Holy Hasek, what’s going on here?
