Sharks Continue To Sputter, And Win

from Eric Gilmore of the Contra Costa Times,

“We’re not satisfied with how we’ve played,” (Doug) Wilson said during the second intermission from the press box high above the ice. “We’re playing on about two-thirds of our cylinders.

“You’ve got to truly be functioning on all cylinders because that’s the difference between the really good teams and the teams that are right below that.”...

Wilson didn’t point fingers. He didn’t have to. The numbers did that for him, fingering Marleau and Cheechoo as the biggest culprits in the team’s scoring dip.

“We haven’t changed our style of play,” Wilson said. “We were second in the conference in goals last year in the Western Conference. And we actually added more offense to the team.

“Maybe it’s because a few of our players haven’t created the offense that they normally do. ... We know that that will come.”

Why Not Sign Sundin

from Rosie DiManno of the Toronto Star,

If Sundin stands his ground on this, the Leafs need to get his signature on a new contract now, so that they don’t lose on both ends of a polarizing predicament. And if Sundin is being truthful about wanting to end his career in Toronto, then he should prove that with a renewed commitment.

However, asked several which ways if he’d re-sign Sundin this summer – whatever happens Feb. 26 – Fletcher declined to oblige.

“That’s a decision that would be entirely up to him. He is in a position to do what he wants.’‘

Not true. Sundin can’t say yes if the invitation is never extended.

If there’s no separation, both parties need to re-affirm their vows.

Chasing Hossa

from Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun,

The talk is Atlanta RW Marian Hossa has made it clear he won’t return. The Habs, Rangers and Wings are considered the frontrunners to acquire Hossa at the Feb. 26 trade deadline. The Senators, Stars, Sharks and Bruins have also called Thrashers GM Don Waddell about Hossa.

Morning Line

from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,

Sharks coach Ron Wilson says the goaltenders’ union should take a vote and refuse to play the straight-man in the nutsy skills shootout in future all-star games. “Let the broadcasters get in there ... they’re all former NHL goalies anyway. They can be miked up. I can hear it now: ‘Oh God, I just ripped my groin on Ovechkin. I don’t know what the hell he just did with the puck, but I’m hurt,’ ‘’ said Wilson.

Blue Jackets Disappoint Home Crowd

from Puck-rakers,

The largest crowd of the season – 18,529, some 385 above the listed capacity – streamed into the building. Here it was, the moment for which the front-office types were waiting. The Blue Jackets, with a 25-22-6 record and in the hunt for a playoff spot, had finally drawn a sellout. They had to earn it.

By the middle of the game, Nationwide was dead. By the middle of the third period, the building was half empty. The Wild, three days after vaporizing the Anaheim Ducks, were still on their game….

Hitchcock isn’t one for excuses, and he made sure to issue the challenges for which he is known. The best Jackets have got to be better, he said. “We cracked again,” he said. “It’s a common theme. The past three games, halfway through, we’ve been the team that cracked.

McCabe Plans To Stay In Toronto

from the Toronto Sun,

Will Bryan McCabe return to the Maple Leafs lineup just in time to be traded?...

There are many things that McCabe is looking forward to when he rejoins the Leafs. Repeatedly answering that question is not one of them.

“Look, no one (from management) has approached me about (waiving it) yet,” McCabe said. “We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.

“I’ve said all along I want to be a Toronto Maple Leaf. That’s why I signed here.”

Tarnstrom Trade Was Just That- Nothing More, Nothing Less

from Puck-rakers,

I asked Howson if this trade should be seen as a pre-cursor of moves to come. I didn’t think it had anything to do with the whole buyer-seller question at the trade deadline, but I had to ask. Here’s what he said.

“Not at all,” Howson said. “This trade, while it helps us right now, it doesn’t point us in one direction or the other in advance of the trade deadline.”

Trades Coming

from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution,

With the calendar hitting February, the month of the trade deadline, Thrashers general manager and head coach Don Waddell predicts an upswing in player swapping.

“I do believe there will be lots of trade activity in the next month or so,” Waddell said. “You may not have the high-end guys, but I see a host of deals. People look at the unrestricted free agents through different eyes. If you can’t keep them, you have to think about moving them along.”
