Kicking Around With Havlat

from Marcie Garcia at NHL.com,

There are times when the basement of the United Center, home of the Chicago Blackhawks, can feel like a soccer pitch. While going through the doors and into the corridors outside the dressing room, sounds of squeaky gym shoes and lively shouts warn of a game in progress.

Right wing Martin Havlat, the Hawks’ big gun, is one of the aspiring soccer stars.

“It’s just a good way for us to warm up,” says the 26-year-old Czech Republic native, by far the biggest soccer fan on the team

Chicago Can Answer Questions With Quick Start

from the Daily Southtown,

Is this the season?

Is this the season the Blackhawks become a playoff team again?

Is this the season they stay healthy? Score some power-play goals? Go to the net?

Is this the season their long-suffering fans, many of whom no longer visit the United Center, are rewarded with more than a promise of a bright future?

Clock Ticking In Tampa

from the St. Peterburg Times,

Is this the last season four of the league’s best players - St. Louis, Vinny Lecavalier, Brad Richards and Dan Boyle - are together as a group?

“If you want to think about that, go ahead,” St. Louis said. “It’s not something we’re going to think about.”

But general manager Jay Feaster admitted, “The clock is ticking.”

And perhaps only a deep playoff run can postpone the alarm.

Start Winning Boston

from the Eagle-Tribune,

So what would make any sane person - whether they’re a puck-loving hockey krishna or not - think that the Boston Bruins can turn around their decade-plus of lethargy and put more fannies back in the seats at the TDBanknorth Garden?

There’s only one way for that to happen: win games. Lots of games. The B’s open up at Phoenix tomorrow as part of a five-game road trip.

“Boston is a city that’s used to winners,” said center Marc Savard, who led the team in scoring by a wide margin a year ago with 96 points. “We have the personnel in place to do that. This is a team ready to win.”

Niedermayer Mindset Hasn’t Changed

from Darren Dreger at TSN,

Niedermayer says his mindset hasn’t changed, adding that if it had he would have reported to training camp with his teammates and he would be in tonight’s lineup in Detroit.

Read into that what you will, however this future Hall of Famer won’t officially tip his hand, other than to say he will be present at the Ducks home opener a week tonight for the raising of the Stanley Cup banner and he doesn’t intend to drag this storyline much beyond that.

All Jacques Martin

A | ``Fair and simple. Do right.’‘

Q | Most moved you’ve ever been by hockey?

Phoenix Looking At The Big Picture

from the East Valley Tribune,

After years of thinking it was only a few free agents away from the postseason, Phoenix has committed to a long- term rebuilding process to give it a solid corps of young players for years to come. Highly touted forwards Peter Mueller and Martin Hanzal, both first-round picks, have already arrived. The pipeline to the future also includes forward Kyle Turris, the No. 3 overall selection this year, and two other prospects, defenseman Keith Yandle and forward Blake Wheeler, recently rated among the league’s top 50 prospects by The Hockey News.

New general manager Don Maloney admits the franchise’s change in philosophy will lead to some long nights this October and November, but he believes the team will be much better in February and March and that progression will carry over into next season and for many years after that.

Dreams About To Come True For Edmonton Rookies

from the Edmonton Journal,

The tossing and turning started on Tuesday for Kyle Brodziak, and he has already played in 16 NHL games.

Andrew Cogliano didn’t know what to expect in the last hours leading up to his first NHL game. He didn’t know if he would be more jittery before he made the walk down the corridor, or during the anthem, or when he leapt over the boards for his first shift.

“This is what you dream of as a kid,” said Sam Gagner, the 18-year-old rookie forward with the freshly signed contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
