Laraque Calls New Fighting Recommendations A Joke

from Darren Dreger of TSN,

Montreal Canadiens forward Georges Laraque is outraged by recommendations made by general managers participating in the annual NHL GM meetings in Naples, Florida.

“All of their recommendations are a joke!” Laraque charged after reading the NHL’s plans on TSN.ca….

It’s that proposed penalty - a 10-minute misconduct - which really angers Laraque.

“Stupidest thing ever!” Laraque told TSN. “I think it’s a joke. They might as well take fighting out of the NHL…fighting won’t be safer; it will be eliminated because an added 10 minute misconduct is too much.”

Top-10 Stanley Cup Contenders

From Sam McCaig at The Hockey News:

San Jose, Detroit and Calgary are the class of the West, while Boston, New Jersey and Washington are the lead pack in a wide-open East. Right here, right now, the smart money is on a Boston-San Jose final.

Here’s why:

1. SAN JOSE SHARKS
They’ve been one of the best teams in the NHL for several years and they’re all too familiar with the pain of losing in the post-season. The blueline has been studded with experience and there’s more grit than ever before among the forwards (and still a lot of talent, too). And this is it for old guys like Claude Lemieux, Rob Blake and Jeremy Roenick. This team is motivated, skilled, experienced and deep. Is it now or never? No. But it’ll sure feel like it if the Sharks fall short once again.

Penalties For Staged Fights

from the CP via TSN,

The NHL’s general managers are hoping to cut down on staged fights.

The GMs would like to see a 10-minute misconduct penalty assessed to players who drop their gloves right after a faceoff.

Referees would also be able to hand out that penalty in other instances where they believe players have engaged in an appointment fight.

added 3:17pm, from Damian Cox of The Spin Blog at the Toronto Star,

There are those who believe all fighting in hockey is wonderful.

There are those who believe it’s all idiotic.

Then there are those that believe some fighting in hockey is necessary and meaningful while just some of the fights are idiotic.

The NHL knew it couldn’t please the first crowd or the second, so it’s going for the third.

Talking Head Hits At The GM Meetings

from David Shoalts of the Globe and Mail,

On the opening day of the annual NHL general managers’ meetings, the NHL Players’ Association proposed a new rule concerning hits to the head.

The proposal was delivered to the league’s GMs on Monday morning by NHLPA executive director Paul Kelly. It calls for three different penalties ranging from a two-minute minor to a match penalty for any player who “either intentionally or recklessly targets the head of that player and makes contact with any part of his body, whether it’s a hand, an elbow or a shoulder,” Kelly said.

added 12:57pm, from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

In addition to the head-checking issue, Kelly and Healy raised a number of other issues from the NHLPA perspective:

Kelly wants to see if NHL players may be able to participate in the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics. The tight turnaround of the NHL schedule break may currently prevent that, but the NHLPA believes it would be a wonderful marketing opportunity for NHL players to be included as part of the Olympics’ opening ceremonies as a number of them could end up as flag bearers for their respective countries.

Talking ‘Points’ At The GM Meetings

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

Other important issues that may come up over the course of the meetings:

• Detroit GM Ken Holland has proposed an adjustment to the tiebreaker system. Holland would like to see the first tiebreaker go from games won to regulation games won. The logic is simple: Reward the teams that win games outright during the regular season, as opposed to winning in overtime or a shootout, when the opposing team also gains a point.

Some GMs favor a move to a three-point system wherein a regulation win is worth three points and an overtime or shootout win worth two points, with the team losing in extra time still gaining a single point.

Vegas Talk

from Kevin Paul Dupont of the Boston Globe,

Well, this year something new will play out in the Nevada desert. The NHL’s annual awards ceremony is headed to Las Vegas, in its familiar time frame, between the awarding of the Stanley Cup (perhaps as late as June 16) and prior to the June 26-27 draft in Montreal. Messrs. Hart, Norris, Vezina, Richard et al are giving up the comfy confines of downtown Toronto, long the stodgy stage of the gala, and are headed with hardware in hand for the world’s gambling mecca. Union boss Paul Kelly, appearing last Saturday on the New England Hockey Journal radio show, confirmed the venue change and emphatically placed the NHLPA stamp of approval on it (this officially drops the “Just Say No Players Association” from the Sunday Hockey Notes lexicon). The shift to L.V., mused Kelly, will offer the event a greater and glitzier profile, possibly attracting more media coverage and high-profile entertainers from other sports and industries (see: Hollywood).

more plus other hockey topics, including the fighting talk at the GM meetings.

Also, it is my understanding the NHL Awards Show will take place at the Pearl Theater at Palms Place in Las Vegas.
