Changing Game Times

From Tim Wharnsby on the Globe & Mail blog,

So the Leafs-Hurricanes game has an opening puck drop of 7:07 p.m. tonight to accommodate the U.S. network, Versus. We love it. Thirty minutes earlier translates into finishing sooner and possibly having an extra post-game beverage.

Seriously, though, the earlier start does help us newspaper guys. Even though there have been so many technological advances in the past 30 years, newspaper deadlines have been stuck in the same rut. On most occasions when the Leafs weekday home games begin at 7:30 p.m., I don’t have time to stick around to hear the wisdom of Toronto coach Paul Maurice because I have to return to the press box to file my rewrite by 11:05 p.m.

Stupid Questions

From David Shoalts on his Globe & Mail blog,

Blake has the good fortune, if you can call it that, that it was caught in the chronic, or earliest stage, and can be treated with a drug called Gleevec and he is not expected to miss even one game for the Maple Leafs.

But he had the misfortune of having Damien Goddard of Sportsnet attend his press conference.

Goddard asked Blake if cancer put his “mini-slump” into perspective. Blake, who scored 40 goals for the New York Islanders last season, had yet to score in three games for the Leafs.

As jaws in the Leafs’ media centre dropped, Blake looked incredulous.

The First Full Week

What are your thoughts on the first week of the NHL season.  I have been enjoying the games and it seems players, coaches and on-ice officials all have the same feel for the game.

Agree or not, feel free to comment.  I also ask readers of my NHL.com blog to leave their comments too.  Link to the blog will be posted when available.

In the Coach’s Corner

From the Edmonton Sun,

Don Cherry thinks Steve Downie got off easy.

The outspoken commentator said Downie should have been suspended 30 games for his preseason hit on Dean McAmmond during Saturday night’s segment of Coach’s Corner on CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada.

Cherry called the hit by the Philadelphia Flyers forward on the Senators defenceman a “cheap shot” and added that players shouldn’t hit like that in the preseason.

Video of Cherry’s comments can be viewed on the CBC video player.  There is no direct link, but just click on the “Hockey Night in Canada” link on the left, then the sub-menu will provide a link to the October 6th edition of Coach’s Corner.

note: unfortunately, U.S. viewers may not be able to access the video, unless you have a way of accessing the page using a Canadian proxy IP.

Progressive Caps

from On Frozen Blog,

We would have blogged with passion aplenty absent any intervention from the Washington Capitals, but in reflecting on the past year, we’re overwhelmed by the support we’ve received from the team’s communications professionals, its athletes, and that filmmaker fella with the nice perch at Verizon Center. The very first comment left at OFB one year ago today was from Mike Vogel. The second came from Ted Leonsis. The next thing we knew we were being invited into Verizon Center’s press box and players’ rooms. What’s excited us most about that remarkable hospitality is its visionary democracy: the Caps have led the entire professional sports industry in laying out the welcome mat to committed bloggers, and there were times last season when a press box row was populated entirely by bloggers.

Without a doubt, the Caps are very blogger friendly.  I remember my first interview with Ted Leonsis…Phone rings at my home, “Hi Paul, it’s Ted”...

HNIC Debut Review

From William Houston at the Globe & Mail,

It was pretty, but, at times, it was pretty boring, too.

We’re talking about Hockey Night In Canada’s Saturday night debut with its new look and programming changes.  The new studio, consisting of leather chairs and a mahogany coffee table in front of a large screen, looks clubby. Visually, it was elegant and also a little staid.

When the conversation is also staid, that’s a problem. It’s a hockey telecast, after all, not Masterpiece Theatre.
