Eric Staal On A Restart

from John Shipley of the PioneerPress,

No one wants to continue playing hockey this season more than Eric Staal; he just has a hard time imagining it.

“The whole thing is still difficult for me to kind of fathom and understand,” the Wild center said Thursday.

The Wild center was nearing the end of his 17th NHL regular season when the 2019-20 campaign was put on hold March 12, and he has seen a lot, returning from two lockouts and leading a relatively new team from North Carolina to a Stanley Cup in 2006. But from the restart plans he has seen floated in media reports — empty arenas, hub cities — he has his doubts about playing again this summer.

“That momentum and those moments of memory are with fans and with people and with excitement,” Staal told reporters on a video conference. “To go through the playoff run with nobody in the building is going to be really weird and different. To me, it’s hard to kind of wrap your head around it.

“Obviously, if that’s the route we go, and it goes, you just figure it out and you do it. I don’t love it personally, but there’s lots of things in life you kind of deal with as you go.”

Bill Guerin On Playing This Season

from NHL.com,

Bill Guerin said he believes the NHL season will resume, potentially in empty arenas, after it was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

"I think it does," the Minnesota Wild general manager told their website Monday. "The bottom line is, we're not doing anything unless it's safe for everybody. And if it is, I think we will, and I think it would be the right thing to do. It'll be a little unusual, a little unorthodox, but that's OK. If we just wrap our arms around it and accept it, it will be fine. Once we start playing hockey, you play hockey."

All Craig Leipold

Graeme Roustan: Today, we have Craig Leipold, the owner of the Minnesota Wild, on with us today for Sports Illustrated and The Hockey News. Thanks very much for joining us.

GR: You sit on the executive committee of the Board of Governors for the NHL. I know that a lot of owners call you to talk about all kinds of issues. How are the owners collectively doing, and how are their staffs doing in general?

CL: We have been talking in the last two weeks. I think there’s high value and understanding what other teams are going to be doing. I have been on the phone to other owners, and we’ve talked through situations and options that we’re looking at. I can say this: if there’s any way that we can get this season, jumpstart it back on the ice and at a minimum play the playoffs, that is the foremost direction that every team owner wants to go. We want to finish this season. I think all hockey fans can rest assured that our No. 1 priority – well, the No. 1 priority is safety and the health of our employees and our fans – but after that, we want to be playing hockey, and we’ll do everything we can to accomplish that. I think all the owners that I’ve spoken with individually and from what I have heard on with the Board of Governors conference calls is everyone feels the same way. Let’s see what we can do to get the season started in some format, make good decisions. And let’s see if we can still play hockey this season.

Bruce Boudreau On His Dismissal

from Michael Russo of The Athletic,

“For two days I haven’t shown my face because I don’t want a pity party,” Boudreau said during the sitdown over lunch. “Everybody knows me, so it’d be like, ‘Poor you.’”

But with his eyes subtly becoming wet, Boudreau, still trying to accept and digest the decision made by Wild general manager Bill Guerin, said, “It’s tough.”
