KK Logo Design Contest

imageKukla’s Korner has launched a contest today at 99designs.com, inviting our artistic-minded hockey friends from around the internet to design a great new logo for the website

There’s a $200 prize for the best logo and we intend to implement the winning entry into KK’s new website design coming later this summer (with the hard work of Kevin at Venn Communications, I should add).

All the details can be read in the brief. Contest closes in 7 days.

Note: submissions must be submitted via 99designs.com.  Please don’t email them to us directly as they will not qualify for the prize.

Thoughts From the Draft: Day 2

imageGuest writer Erin Nicks is covering the NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner this weekend.

By Erin Nicks

Those concerned about Ottawa picking up some grit in this year’s draft will need to dig deep into Round 5, when the club (after much apparent hemming and hawing) selected defenceman Mark Borowiecki with the 139th pick.

NHL Entry Draft 2008 Liveblog

imageGuest writers Erin Nicks and Patrick Williams are covering the NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner this weekend. This post will be updated with random news through the evening. Original post-time is 5:26pm. All times EST. Updates will be time-stamped and added below.

5:26pm—Erin:  Zach Bogosian, on his travels to Ottawa and the surrounding areas to train…

“I’ve been coming up here 4-5 days a week – it’s pretty bad on gas, but it’s worked for me for the past couple of years.  Obviously (fitness guru) Lorne Goldenberg has trained some great players like Gary Roberts and Cory Stillman – he helps me out a lot.  That’s one of the main reasons why I’ve succeeded over the past few years – he made my body ready for the rigours of the NHL.”

By Erin Nicks

As the top-ranked North American goaltender in this year’s draft, Thomas McCollum has garnered attention for being a potential franchise backstopper. At yesterday’s media luncheon featuring some of the top prospects, the soft-spoken ‘tender shared a few thoughts on the draft and his future.

KK Interview with Drew Doughty

imageGuest writer Erin Nicks is covering the NHL Entry Draft in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner this weekend.

By Erin Nicks

Blue-chip defenceman Drew Doughty wants to jump immediately into the NHL with both feet—and many think he’s capable of doing so.  After a conversation with him yesterday, you get a pretty clear idea of where he’s hoping to land.

Meet the Press: Patrick Williams

Today is the opening of the NHL Entry Draft, and Erin Nicks and Patrick Williams are covering the event in Ottawa for Kukla’s Korner. Earlier this week we asked Erin a few questions about her life and love of hockey, and today it’s Patrick’s turn.

Patrick is the ideal journalist to cover the NHL’s draft weekend, given how much time he spends with and writing about the up-and-coming stars.  His beat is the American Hockey League—writing for the likes of Slam! Sports and The Hockey News, among others—and so he’ll be seeing a lot of some of these draft picks in the coming years as they rise into the AHL and beyond.

Patrick, what is the main difference between working in the media in the NHL and AHL?
Everything in the NHL is a lot more tense, and the egos (and not simply those belonging to the players) are decidedly larger.

2008 NHL Entry Draft at Kukla’s Korner

Kukla’s Korner will be covering the NHL Entry Draft live again this year, this time with the help of two great hockey writers, Erin Nicks and Patrick Williams.  They’ll be providing exclusive interviews from Ottawa, liveblogging the gossip, and posting whatever else they find going on behind the scenes.

More details available here.

P.S. My endless gratitude to Patrick and Erin for undertaking this project with me for KK readers—it should be a lot of fun!

Fantastic & Fabulous

Unable to see very well during the last two weeks or so, I have been listening and listening to talk radio via the web.

Two words kept popping up when Mike Babcock was being interviewed and they were fantastic and fabulous when describing everything Red Wings.

Well, I want to steal those words and use them when describing my health at this time.  It has been a very rough two weeks for me and I had doubts about my vision returning to normal.  I want to thank everyone for their prayers, good wishes and the hundreds of emails I received from KK readers, MSM’s, and those involved in the game.  My health is very close to 100% and I feel I can start to contribute to KK once again.

Hopefully Alanah can sleep the whole weekend and catch up on some well deserved rest.  Many of you have witnessed what she has done to keep KK alive during my absence and I wanted to publicly thank her for “keeping the news coming”!

Kukla Will Return, I Promise!

Since I’m getting so much mail about this—understandably—I thought it would be best to provide another update here on KK.

Paul is definitely going to be okay and will be back to KK in top-form soon. His recovery has been slow and with some unexpected setbacks, but he’s definitely improving. Meanwhile, because the problem is seriously affecting his eyesight, he can’t respond to emails so please have patience if you’re waiting to hear back.  If you have anything urgent that you’d like me to pass onto him, just .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

P.S.  KK’s server hijacked my email yesterday for several hours, and when it finally landed in my inbox I got seriously backlogged. So please accept my apologies for the delayed responses.

Thanks to everyone for all the support.

Where’s Paul?

I just want to reassure everyone who’s written and wondered where Paul Kukla is that he will be back soon but can’t promise exactly when.

Most likely his presence will be on-and-off over the coming days, as he’s recovering slowly from some health problems.  Nothing to worry about, but the symptoms make it impossible to work most of the time. (And if you’ve sent him an email and are awaiting a reply, please have patience—he’s limited in that regard for the moment as well.)

Meanwhile, if anyone has any business regarding KK, you’re welcome to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).  I swear I don’t bite. smile
