from the News & Observer,
Rod Brind’Amour and his Carolina Hurricanes teammates had too long to work on their offseason tans.
Rested and ready, a few of them returned this week to drill and skate until they were red in the face.
The unofficial practices began Monday at the RecZone on Hodges Street and offered a welcome, on-ice reunion after the disappointment of last season.
With no playoff run to occupy his time, Brind’Amour spent his spring and summer helping to umpire his son’s baseball games and working out regularly on his own.

From the AP via TSN,
Carolina Hurricanes star Eric Staal and his brother Jordan Staal of the Pittsburgh Penguins have been offered plea deals stemming from their arrests at Eric Staal’s bachelor party in Minnesota last month.
Paul Krepelka, the agent who represents both players, said the prosecutor in Cook County, Minn., offered to settle the case by having the Staals plead guilty to a petty misdemeanour for disorderly conduct. Charges of obstructing the legal process are to be dropped against both players, Krepelka said.
Ten of the 14 young men charged after complaints of screaming, yelling and loud music appeared in court and accepted the same deal Wednesday, Krepelka said.

from the News & Observer,
The trade that brought Matt Cullen back to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday also may have wrapped up the team’s offseason business with less than two months left before training camp.
Cullen’s arrival completed Carolina’s lineup at forward, with 13 players under contract, and Andrew Hutchinson’s departure leaves the Hurricanes with seven defensemen under contract, a number Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford considers acceptable.

from the News & Observer,
The New York Rangers had been trying to trade Cullen to clear salary-cap room, ostensibly to sign Souray. But when the free-agent defenseman signed a five-year, $27 million deal with the Oilers on Thursday, the Rangers’ cap problems became considerably less pressing.
Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford, who has declined to comment about any potential Cullen trade, said Friday he continues to pursue a third-line center without success.

from the News & Observer,
Erik Cole is home now in upstate New York, training camp still two months away, the Carolina Hurricanes’ last game three months in the past.
But no matter how far he gets away from hockey, it’s still a pain in his neck.
Sixteen months after Cole suffered a compression fracture of the C5 vertebra in his neck after a hit from behind, he’s still feeling the effects. He continues to strengthen his back and neck muscles to build stability in his neck, and he wonders if he’ll ever regain the flexibility he once had.

The first chance to see the Carolina Hurricanes in their new uniforms won’t cost a thing—although buying one for yourself won’t be cheap.
The NHL is switching to new, high-tech uniforms designed by Reebok this fall. The Hurricanes will wear them for the first time in their exhibition-season opener against the Washington Capitals on Sept. 16. Admission to the game will be free.
The jerseys also will be on sale that day as part of the annual “Caniac Carnival” fan festivities. The prototypes used at this past winter’s All-Star Game retail for $350, with replica models going for $110.
