Chat with Bret Hedican

The boys at AOL Fanhouse are hosting a live-chat today:

Be sure to stop by at 1:00 p.m. this afternoon as we host another live chat session. I’ll be co-hosting along with Ted Starkey, NHL Editor for AOL Sports as we talk to Bret Hedican, currently a defenseman with the Carolina Hurricanes. It’s sure to be interesting, as Hedican won a Cup himself just two seasons ago with Carolina, and he’s been in the headlines thanks to his wife, Olympic Gold Medal winner Kristi Yamaguchi, the current champion at Dancing With the Stars.

Check it out. It starts right away, at 1pm ET.

Sacrifices of a Hockey Family

From Michael Traikos at the National Post,

The family had just built a new house in Littleton and knew little of Canada. But after playing in a tournament in North Vancouver, where Bowman faced real competition for the first time, everyone realized that the young centre needed to be challenged.

“It ended up being a really good decision,” said Drayson Bowman, who was a third-round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in last year’s NHL draft. “I wouldn’t be here today, I don’t think, unless we did it.”

Making the move was only possible because Mark Bowman owned his own financial consulting company. Still, there were sacrifices to be made. Mark had to fly back to the home office in Littleton almost every other week. And for about four years, life revolved around the two boys’ hockey career.

Laviolette Returning To Carolina

from Yahoo,

General manager Jim Rutherford said Friday that the team would retain the coach who in 2006 led the Hurricanes to their only Stanley Cup. Speculation swirled for the past month about Laviolette’s future after Carolina missed the playoffs in both seasons after its championship run.

Carolina Owner Taking Hands-On Approach

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer via the Santa Barbara News-Press,

Ask Peter Karmanos what his team’s payroll will look like next season, and he’s quick to say what the Carolina Hurricanes spend on players will be determined by what the franchise makes on advertising and tickets.

And in that respect, the Hurricaanes’ owner is putting his mouth where his money is.

Having completed a hands-on restructuring of the sales force of Compuware, the software company he helped found, Karmanos said he’s going to try to do the same with his hockey team.

‘‘I plan to come in and actually help work on both those areas myself two or three days a week starting in July,’’ Karmanos said this week in a telephone interview from his Detroit office. ‘‘We’re going to do just fine.’‘

At A Loss

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,

Not only did the Hurricanes suffer the embarrassment of missing the playoffs two years in a row after winning the Stanley Cup, they cost themselves at least $2 million and potentially $20 million or more in playoff revenue and season-ticket sales.

As it stands now, even with revenue-sharing payments from the NHL that could amount to as much as $8 million, the Hurricanes expect to lose more than the $4 million they lost last season. The team turned a $10 million profit in 2005-06 while winning the Stanley Cup.

Not A Good Feeling For The Hurricanes

via the AP at The Charlotte Observer,

“I didn’t tell them anything,” coach Peter Laviolette said Monday. “I couldn’t. I didn’t know what to say. I’ll figure that out as we move along. I had a hard time moving forward myself.”

So the Hurricanes (43-33-6) become the first NHL team to miss the playoffs in each of the two seasons after winning the Stanley Cup.

“It’s like your legs were chopped out from under you, and you feel totally helpless,” said forward Justin Williams, whose empty-netter sealed the ‘06 title.

Canes Can Only Sit & Watch Now

from Luke DeCock of the News & Observer,

The Canes gave away a house, a car and the jerseys off their backs. They may have given away the division title as well with a 4-3 loss to the Panthers on Friday—Florida’s first win at the RBC Center since December 2002, in arguably the only game of the 16 since that really mattered.

“Everybody’s sick about it,” Hurricanes coach Peter Laviolette said. “There’s not a good feeling. I don’t know what to tell you. There’s not a good feeling about it, nothing positive to take from tonight.

“We needed to win a game to be in charge, win our division, have home ice in the playoffs, and we lost that. It’s gut-wrenching.”
