Stars center Mike Modano said at 8:10 p.m. that he has agreed to terms with the Dallas Stars on a five-year deal worth in excess of $17 million. Modano and his agent had rejected the deal earlier in the day, but Modano agreed to the offer after a phone conversation with Stars owner Tom Hicks.

Refs React to Walkom Hiring

I Have Heard it All

Listening to Mojo Radio in Vancouver, a guy calls up all emotional about Niedermayer. Says the Canucks need to clear cap room for him to sign with them. Then he started crying and breaking up. It was not a put on call, the producer came on the air and said the guy called back and apologized about being so emotional.

Canucks Press Conference

Vancouver held a press conference earlier in the day to announce the Naslund signing. Now having another press conference at 5pm5:45, EDT. Could Forsberg or Niedermayer be headed there. The traded Sopel earlier in the day to clear some cap room. update 5:57pm. Canucks talked about Sopel trade and said expect a dman coming to them in a trade shortly.

New NHL Director of Officiating

Stephen Walkom was hired Wednesday as NHL director of officiating. Walkom became an NHL official in 1990 and has been one of the league's top referees for the last several years. He worked the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2002 and 2004 Stanley Cup finals. "With the rule changes that the league has adopted for the upcoming season, we believe that Stephen is ideally suited to provide direction and guidance to our on-ice officials," said Colin Campbell, the NHL's director of hockey operations. "His judgment and professionalism on the ice, coupled with the respect he has earned as one of the top officials in the game, will be of great benefit in his transition to the officiating management ranks."

Modano News

Mike Modano rejects Stars' contract offer. Will this ever end? update 3:53pm, via TSN,

Mike Modano's agent says his client has rejected the latest contract offer from the Dallas Stars. "I informed the Stars of Mike's decision a few minutes ago," Brian Lawton told TSN. While it is still possible that Modano will return to Dallas, that possibility now seems remote, despite reports Tuesday night that we would be returning to the franchise. Lawton would not say which teams are still in the running for Modano's services, but NHL sources tell TSN that Boston and Chicago both have four year deals on the table worth in excess of $20 million. The Stars had offered Modano a five year deal worth $17.5 million.
