Mario Wants to Play 3 More Years

from the NEPA News,

Lemieux is healthy, relaxed and confident that he can play a lot longer. "At least two, maybe three," Lemieux said. "As long as I stay healthy and can still play at a top level." Crosby certainly hopes Lemieux plays that long. Crosby's agent, Pat Brisson, said it was evident when Crosby and Lemieux first met a summer ago while training together in Los Angeles that there was a "karma" between them, despite the age difference. Crosby doesn't turn 18 until Aug. 7. "Mario's been through this and Mark Recchi, too, to a degree, and they can mentor him and walk him through the next stage of his life," Patrick said. "The timing couldn't be better, with the new collective bargaining agreement and the new rules, for Sidney to be coming to us. It's just fantastic. It's a great time to be coming into the league." The Penguins and Crosby have yet to work out as contract but, with the new NHL labor agreement setting most of the standards for a first-year player, Patrick is hopeful a deal can be reached quickly. "I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I don't see problems," Patrick said.

Team by Team Picks

A great source to see your teams picks in today's draft. Individual team picks are on the right side and just be forewarned, the sight takes a little time to load. Also, I have been surfing the NHL team sites and the majoriity of them are keeping up as best as they can, but one team site, that of the Detroit Red Wings, still has a blurb that states catch the draft today....no mention of any picks at all. What gives Wings?

Habs Shocker in 1st Round

from the CP via the Toronto Globe and Mail,

The Montreal Canadiens' highest-ranked pick in two decades was enough of a shocker that even the player chosen didn't see it coming. With the No. 5 pick — their highest since 1984 — the Habs selected a goalie. The fact that Montreal already has a Hart and Vezina trophy winner could explain the slight gasp in the room when the Habs announced their pick: Carey Price. His cousin, Shane Doan, scored 27 goals in the last NHL season with the Phoenix Coyotes, and he has another cousin in minor-league hockey. Price cracked a few jokes when asked whether Montreal would have been his first choice. He said the Habs were his favourite team growing up — for about two years in elementary school. "I always got booed for that," he said. He switched allegiances when the Vancouver Canucks made the Stanley Cup final in 1994, he said. So were the Habs his first choice? "Well, yeah," he said. Then he chuckled and paused. "Now (they are)."

Draft Views

Congrats to the NHL for the speed of the 1st round of the draft. No 15 minutes of "on the clock" wasted time. Also, the TSN broadcast crew has provided great bits and Bob McKenzie has been pretty dead on with his picks. Remember to check out Phil Coffey's blogging from the draft. Keeping us up-to-date on the whole scene in Ottawa.

2005 NHL Entry Draft

Sporstnet has a great draft board. They will be supplying stats and the Red Line report on each person drafted. A good source for all the information you may be seeking.
