23 Games Handed Out for OHL Brawl

From the CP:

Oshawa Generals defenceman James DeLory has been suspended eight games for his spear on Sarnia Sting star Steven Stamkos.  He’s among seven players and coaches who will miss a total of 23 games for an ugly Ontario Hockey League brawl that followed Oshawa’s 4-3 win last Sunday.

DeLory, 19, touched off the brawl by spearing Stamkos, the 17-year-old forward projected to be the first pick in this summer’s NHL draft.

Here’s the brawl that started it all:

Stop The Party In Prague & Stockholm

from Darren Dreger at TSN,

The NHL put the cart before the horse.

That’s how NHLPA Executive Director Paul Kelly responded mere minutes after the National Hockey League announced the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers will open the 2008 regular season in Prague and Stockholm.

The Players Association hasn’t approved the agreement and Kelly was surprised by the announcement the New York Rangers will also participate in the Victoria Cup. Although unlikely, Kelly says the players may not agree to play, “There is a chance we wouldn’t consent,” Kelly added….

“If they want us to be a true business partner, then they need to include us from the beginning,” Kelly concluded.

The Afternoon Line

From Alyssa Milano at her NHL.com blog,

I actually bumped into Luc Robataille last night, and I haven’t seen Luc in probably 15 years. When he saw me, he said to me “I used to carry you around on my back!” because when I met him I was so little. When we spoke last night, I said “you know what? You were like my only high school friend. I never got to go to high school, so you’re like my only high school buddy!” He laughed.

note: more on Alyssa yesterday, as she promotes her line of NHL fashions at the ASG.

ASG Memories: 1991 Chicago

1991 All-Star Game – January 19, 1991, Chicago Stadium: Just days into the Persian Gulf war, the Chicago faithful saluted their country during the U.S. anthem.

84 Game Schedule

Gary Bettman during his press conference from Atlanta said the BOG talked in general terms on the 84 game schedule, but it is way to pre-mature to vote on it.  Many issues still need to be discussed and/or resolved.

Update 2:14pm ET—
More from the press conference, from the Vancouver Sun:

“It’s not ready for prime-time consideration,” he said. “Whether or not it works, it’s way too early to say. We have lots of issues to talk about.”

Despite the ratings success of this season’s Winter Classic game outdoors between the Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins - it was the most-watched hockey game in the United States this decade - Bettman said there are no immediate plans for a sequel.

“My anticipation is we’ll do another one, but I can’t tell you where or when,” he said. “I can assure you we will not do too many; we want to keep it special.”

Brunnstrom A Lock For Detroit?

via the blog of Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

I do think the WIngs will be one Swede stronger at some point this spring, and his name is Fabian Brunnstrom. He’s an almost 23-year-old forward who’s become a star in the Swedish Elite League. He went undrafted, but now NHL teams are taking notice, and the Wings are among teams who have made an offer. From what I hear, the club believes it is the front-runner to acquire Brunnstrom.

All NHL clubs are on an even field as far as what entry-level contract they can offer Brunnstrom, so on his part, it’ll just come down to where he wants to go. I hear he’s already made up his mind about coming to Detroit.

Those Were The All-Star Days

from Empty Netters,

-We know it was the early 1990’s and this is a hockey game, but just about everyone had a mullet. Even Mark Messier. (Yes, we’re shocked to see he had hair too.)

-This was the first time a skills competition was held.

-Some of those regular jerseys, like Toronto’s, really clashed with those All-Star pants.

-There’s nothing quite as right as seeing Patrick Roy in a Canadiens jersey.

-Mike Gartner’s porn ‘stache was sweet.

Skating With The Stars

from Brad Holland of NHL.com,

Standing out there on the blue line with the rest of my fellow All-Stars, Dion Phaneuf, Alex Ovechkin and Marion Gaborik, I finally realized that I had made it. I had paid my dues, and earned my reward, and it felt good.

That’s right. Brad Holland, an All-Star for a day.

Let me explain.

Thursday evening, I was part of a crew that put on a mock-up of the NHL Dodge SuperSkills competition.

Join The Fun In Columbus

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,

My recurring thought is this: Forlorn and frustrated fans who long ago fled Nationwide Arena ought to know that it’s now safe to re-enter the building. This team is legitimate.

The Jackets have glaring needs for a playmaker and a puck-moving, right-handed defenseman, but they have not dwelled on what they’re missing. They have built something of substance on top of Leclaire, an All-Star in everything but name, and the defense he anchors.
