WJC- Going For The Gold

from Bob McKenzie of TSN,

Canada's 4-0 victory over Finland in the world junior semifinals was significant in the sense that the Canadian squad will play in the gold medal game for a fifth straight year. But the verdict is still out on how this team looks when compared to the others that have made it this far.

WJC- Russia vs. USA

I have no idea why Center Ice is not picking up this game which starts at 11pm ET. Folks lucky enough to get Fox Sports Net North will get the game live, while the people in the Detroit area can sit back and watch Oklahoma vs. Pepperdine in an exciting college basketball game on Fox Sports Net Detroit. Of course, our Canadian friends will be able to catch the game on TSN. You can also listen to the game live, if you so desire. It sure would have been nice to see Evgeni Malkin playing for Russia, many say he is a better than AO, which is hard to believe.

Time To Go Mario

from Skip Bayless of ESPN,

At 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, you at times have dominated hockey games in a way no man ever has -- with power and finesse. You have won two Stanley Cups in Pittsburgh. You at least deserve to be in the greatest-ever debate with Gretzky and Hull and Orr. You might be considered the greatest if you hadn't missed part of every season you've played -- all 17 -- with injuries or illness. You beat Hodgkin's disease. Now you say you have an irregular heartbeat under control. You've been blessed -- and unlucky at the same time. Your back has always plagued you. Your team defaulted on the millions in deferred salary it owed you, so you had to buy the Penguins to protect your financial future.

Mid-season Awards

from Kevin Dupont of NBC Sports,

Lidstrom front-runner for Norris; Hasek, Biron for Vezina; Crosby for Calder- Right now, by my eye, Jaromir Jagr is the MVP, hands down. I really don't see much room for debate on this one. Without Jags, the Rangers aren't even in the playoff hunt, never mind among the Eastern Conference leaders.

USA Goaltenders- Down They Go

from Scott Burnside of ESPN,

With the start of the Olympic tournament just six weeks off and the U.S. goaltending picture getting uglier by the day, Buffalo Sabres rookie netminder Ryan Miller continues to be a painful reminder of an opportunity lost. Team USA general manager Don Waddell and the rest of the management team thought the broken thumb that cost Miller six weeks of his first NHL season and his relative inexperience were enough to push him down the U.S. depth chart and off the 23-man roster announced on Dec. 19. And who could blame them, really? But since the team was named, things have gotten progressively worse.

NHL Power Brokers

from the CP via CJAD,

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman shot up 34 spots to sixth on the Sporting News' annual Power 100 ranking of the most influential people in sports. Bettman finished 40th on last year's list but made the dramatic jump after overseeing the lockout, negotiating a salary cap in the new collective bargaining agreement with players and implementing a series of rule changes that have helped improve the NHL game. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly was 17th on the list while executive vice-president and director of hockey operations Colin Campbell was 32nd.
