Carpiniello Gets It Right

In assessing last night’s loss to the Florida Panthers, Journal News New York Rangers’ beat writer Rick Carpiniello does a great job in pointing out this team’s flaws.

Here’s a sneak peek:

“This team lacks skill. You can argue all you want about the system being stifling, or the coach making bad personnel decisions, or whatever. And I’m not necessarily disagreeing with you.

But who is transporting the puck from the defensive zone to the offensive zone? Who? Gomez is capable of doing it, and in fact that’s one of his strengths when he’s playing well. Zherdev can do it. Callahan once in a while. That’s really all, and the transportation of the puck from defense to offense is a crucial element in any attack, whether the attack is passive or aggressive. It is a terribly under-appreciated facet of a good power play, and thus one of many reasons the Rangers’ power play stinks. And it truly does stink.”

A Tough Test

If there was ever a game that the New York Rangers could use as a measuring stick, tonight’s tilt with the San Jose Sharks in San Jose would be that game.

San Jose comes into tonight’s matchup sporting a 25-4-3 record, good for 53 points and the top spot in both the Western Conference and the Natioanl Hockey League. On the other side, the Bluershirts come into tonight’s game with a 22-11-2 record, 46 points and sits in second place in the Eastern Conference (at least until all the other teams catch up in games played).

In his Rangers Report Blog, Journal News Ranger beat writer Sam Weinman says that tonight’s game could be a game where the Rangers realize that they’re not that far off or they could realize that they still have a lot of work to do to become a Stanley Cup contender.

Intrigued

I know that many of you New York Ranger fans out there were certainly intrigued by reports that Mats Sundin had selected the Blueshirts as the team he wanted to play for this season.

However, Sam Weinman, Rangers’ beat writer for The Journal News, reported that Sundin’s agent, J.P. Barry, said in an e-mail that the big Swede has yet to make a decision but at the same time, noted that the Blueshirts have expressed their interest.

The plot thickens folks. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of days because it’s a rematch of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals for Mats: the New York Rangers vs. the Vancouver Canucks, who already offered him a two-year deal worth $20 million.

Prucha to Play tonight in Miami?

Sam Weinman of The Journal News reports in his Rangers Report Blog that New York Rangers forward Petr Prucha may be in the lineup for tonight’s game against the Florida Panthers.

Prucha has played just eight games this season, his last one being on November 8 against the Washington Capitals. In those eight games, Prucha has no points and just ten shots on goal.

For Prucha, tonight is an opportunity for him to show that he belongs in the league and with the Rangers. However, if he doesn’t contribute offensively or looks out of place, he could find himself right back in the press box.

Valiquette to Start

According to Sam Weinman of The Journal News, the New York Rangers have elected to start Stephen Valiquette this afternoon against the Ottawa Senators.

Valiquette played half the game on Wednesday night against the Vancouver Canucks and stopped all 15 shots he faced after Henrik Lundqvist was pulled by Rangers’ head coach Tom Renney (five goals allowed).

However, according to Weinman, Valiquette had been penciled in for this game for a long time and it’s not just a coincidence that he is starting after Lundqvist’s struggles on Wednesday night.
