PH: First off, tell us about your thoughts when you decided you were going to cover the Heritage Classic for The Face-Off Hockey Show?
SW: The only thought was that I was lucky enough to be living in Calgary and able to get the nod from the NHL brass (who were fantastic at this event, by the way) to be able to get into this experience. It really worked out well for the show as Jonny and Marc (the other co-hosts) were able to get up to Pittsburgh to cover the Winter Classic. We had “Classic” year, to use a horrible, David Caruso-esque phrasing.
PH: What was it like seeing McMahon Stadium turned into a hockey rink/arena for a few days?
SW: Football fields make the best hockey rinks, and McMahon is no different. They had to bring in some rafters for one of the endzones, as the CFL doesn’t have as much capacity as NFL field. The set-up was great, they did a bang-up job on making everything surrounding the rink very festive and capturing the essence of the outdoor game in Canada.
