Being Patient with Kreider

When an NHL rookie makes his debut and burst onto the scene in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and does well, expectations are always high for the following season.

This is exactly the case when it comes to New York Rangers' forward Chris Kreider. In the Blueshirts' magical postseason last year, Kreider showed that he can play the game by picking up 5 goals and adding 2 assists for 7 points in 18 games.

What was also telling about Kreider is that he could be counted on to score big goals. In the playoffs last year, two of Kreider's five goals were game-winning goals.

When the NHL lockout got underway, Kreider joined the team's AHL club, the Connecticut Whale, and was expected to continue to producing, considering what he did in the playoffs. Unfortunately for Kreider, he struggled for a bit and went through some growing pains.

New York Rangers: Quite the Enigma

From Steve Zipay at Blue Notes:

Rangers coach John Tortorella dismissed a question about the conference standings last week, insisting that it was too early to keep track. Perhaps he’d better begin.

Through 27 games, the Rangers (13-13-1) have collected 50 percent of the available points: 27. To reach the playoffs, compiling 94 points presumably will be necessary. So, the Rangers (6-12-1 in the last 19) will need 67, or 61 percent, of the remaining 110 points available.

Their performance in the upcoming four-game stretch, over eight days beginning Saturday in Buffalo, could be telling. They face the Sabres (15-7-2) twice, home and away, the Blackhawks in Chicago (16-6-3 and 10-2-1 at home) and the Red Wings (13-9-4) at the Garden.

One reason why the Rangers are sinking is because they are juggling not three or four lines, but two-thirds of a No. 1 line: Marian Gaborik, whose second goal Monday was his NHL-leading 21st, was named the NHL’s third star for November. Sidekick Vinny Prospal has six goals; no other Ranger has more. A dozen teams have at least two players in double-digits.

The collective frost is remarkable: Ales Kotalik (one goal in the last 15 games and minus-12 overall), Chris Higgins (two in 26), Ryan Callahan (four in 27), Chris Drury (none in 12) and Sean Avery (two in 19), provide no punch. Enver Lisin, playing with a hairline fracture in his left foot, is pointless in 12 games. C Brandon Dubinsky, who has missed nine games with a broken hand, should return in a few weeks. Dubinsky, with the potential to be a top six forward, will allow Prospal to move back to left wing.

Cheechoo - A fit on Broadway?

Two days ago, Steve Zipay of Blue Notes asked New York Ranger fans if they would like to obtain San Jose Sharks’ winger Jonathan Cheechoo should he be made available:

The Sharks have Thornton, Marleau, Clowe, Pavelski, Setoguchi, Mihalek and more upfront and a lot of bitterness from the playoff loss to the Ducks. Little while ago, the word from a spy out West is that Jonathan Cheechoo is being made available. Makes sense, we heard the same thing at the trade deadline.

The right wing will be 29 in July. He’s 6-1, 200. Cap hit would be $3 mil in 09-10 and 10-11. Affordable, if you believe that he can turn it around once he’s off the third line.

Cheechoo did score 56 goals and 37 with Thornton before slipping to 23 and just 12 in 66 games last season.

Would you want him? If you do, who would you place him with? Could he help Scott Gomez or Chris Drury turn their games around or would he be another free-agent bust who signed on Broadway? What are your thoughts?

A New Beginning

In their first game after the trade deadline, the New York Rangers will have all their new guys in the lineup tonight against the last place New York Islanders.

With Nik Antropov, the team now has some size on the wing as well as a guy who can score goals (21 goals this season). If head coach John Tortorella can light a fire under this guy, the team may finally see more power play goals for. Newsday Rangers’ beat writer Steve Zipay believes that he’ll skate with Chris Drury and Brandon Dubinsky. Dubinsky’s and Antropov’s size should open up the ice more for Drury.

Zipay thinks that Sean Avery will skate with Ryan Callahan and Lauri Korpikoski, forming a small but very aggressive line. As most knowledgeable hockey/Ranger fans know, Avery can be tenacious on the forecheck and that is exactly what Tortorella wants him to do.

New defenseman Derek Morris will be paired with one of his former partners from the Phoenix Coyotes, Paul Mara. He gives the backline some added size as well as another player that can play the point on the power play. This is another player that Tortorella needs to light a fire to help be more consistent.

This team definitely got a bit better at the trade deadline and now, they need to show it by clinching a playoff spot in the tight Eastern Conference.

Change on the Way?

With John Tortorella making his season debut as the New York Rangers head coach tonight against the Toronto Maple leafs, many fans are hoping that this will signal lots of positive changes.

Based on what Tortorella told the press corps yesterday, he wants to instill confidence in his troops and give them the creativity that they need to play effectively. At the same time, however, he also mentioned that he does not want to fall into the same trap he did last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where his team went all out on offense and suffered on the defensive end.

With that said, Tortorealla is going to do everything he can to get some offensive chemistry into this lineup. For one thing, expect to see a lot less of the fourth line and more of the top three lines as Tortorella believes in playing his best players as much as possible in order to give the team the best chance to win a hockey game.

Don’t Give It Away

The New York Rangers have won two of their last four games (had a 2-1 OT loss to the Buffalo Sabres and 6-3 spanking at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens) and look to continue their strong defensive play and timely goal scoring when they take on the New York Islanders tonight at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

After head coach Scott Gordon explained to the media that he wants to play his youngsters more, it’s easy to think that the Rangers may skate all over the Isles tonight and come up with two points. However folks, remember that this is the Blueshirts and that they’ve lost games like this to the Isles before.

As such, Rangers’ head coach Tom Renney is keeping the same lineup he used on Saturday night in the team’s 2-0 shutout victory over the Ottawa Senators. This means that Aaron Voros and Dan Fritsche will once again be scratches.

Ranger Reading

Tonight, the New York Rangers (22-12-3) return from their two-day holiday break to take on the New Jersey Devils (19-11-3) at Madison Square Garden.

Luckily for the Blueshirts, the Devils played last night and got shutout by the Pittsburgh Penguins (19-12-4) so they may a bit tired. The Devils also haven’t scored a goal in regulation in seven period. On the other hand, that’s never stopped the Rangers from losing before so why should these be considered factors now?

The main note for tonight’s game is that defenseman Michal Rozsival is out tonight because of what the team is describing as family reasons. In his place will be Corey Potter.

A Brand New Day

First off, I hope you all had a happy and safe holiday, especially you New York Ranger fans out there who were looking to shake off Tuesday night’s terrible loss to the Washington Capitals.

Tomorrow night’s game against the New Jersey Devils should be looked at as a fresh start for the Rangers. Again,  they’re coming off a terrible collapse against the Caps’ and have displayed rather inconsistent hockey over the past month or so.

So what better way to shake off the cob webs and play the best hockey they can play than by beating their Hudson River rivals?

All About Two Points

The New York Rangers hope to extend their win streak to three tonight when they take on the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center.

The Blueshirts are coming off an impressive 3-1 win last night over the Anaheim Ducks, getting goals from Chris Drury, Nigel Dawes and Nikolai Zherdev. The team also got another strong performance from their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped 19 of 20 shots.

It doesn’t appear that the whole Mats Sundin situation is a distraction to the team as all they are focused on is winning.

The Rangers Say Goodbye to another J.D.

As was reported here on Kukla’s Korner, Sam Weinman’s Rangers Report, Steve Zipay’s Blue Notes, Andrew Gross’s Ranger Rants and his own blog of course, John Dellapina is leaving the New York Rangers beat to go work for the National Hockey League.

He will certainly be missed by many of the beat writers on this team, especially Sam Weinman of The Journal News’ Steve Zipay of Newsday, who not only remember Dellapina for his hockey knowledge, but his knowledge on the game of life.
