Grading the Blueshirts 1/4 through

From Rick Carpiniello at The Rangers Report:

Anyway, here are my first-quarter report cards. As always I’d love to hear what you think, or how you’d grade them:

Michael Del Zotto: A …He’s going to get stronger and a little meaner and he might be a star.
Dan Girardi: C … Is is possible that the Staal-Girardi pair was a product of Tom Renney’s system?
Wade Redden: B … Fits much better in this system, is playing with some passion; but will never earn that type of salary.
Marian Gaborik: A … Absolutely as advertised, and remained upright for most of the first quarter. Where would they be without him?
Ales Kotalik: B … Probably could do a little more, but that shot has given the Rangers a legit PP pointman they didn’t have at all last year.
Sean Avery: C … Don’t know if the benching in last year’s playoffs put too much of a leash on him, or what. I do know that the Avery Rules, as called by almost all officials, are ridiculous.
Brandon Dubinsky: C … Got the big contract, and didn’t produce before the injury. He’s not a first-line center, but he should be more than he was.

It Means A Lot

As I pointed out in yesterday’s blog, tonight’s game against the Montreal Canadiens is absolutely critical for the New York Rangers. The Rangers are currently tied with the Florida Panthers (take on the Philadelphia Flyers tonight) for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 89 points.

A win tonight over the Habs and a loss for the Panthers would help the blueshirts because one, it gives them two points and two, it gives them another victory in case the remaining seed comes down to a tie-breaker. Basically put, the team needs to win tonight to help clinch a playoff spot within the next five days.

Rangers Reading

Tonight’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes is a huge one for the New York Rangers as they look to increase the space between them, the Montreal Canadiens and Florida Panthers while also shooting for a higher seed in the Eastern Conference.

Not a Surprise

If you are a New York Rangers fan or had been watching the team the past month and a half or so, you knew that the team was going to make a change whether it was with management, acquiring/trading a player or firing the coach.

As it turns out, it was the third option as the team let go of head coach Tom Renney and replaced him with John Tortorella. While many people will feel for Renney and believe that it really wasn’t his fault, this move had to be made and Tortorella will come in, hold players accountable and may be just the guy that the team needs going forward.

What do you folks think?

Don’t Give It Away

The New York Rangers have won two of their last four games (had a 2-1 OT loss to the Buffalo Sabres and 6-3 spanking at the hands of the Montreal Canadiens) and look to continue their strong defensive play and timely goal scoring when they take on the New York Islanders tonight at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

After head coach Scott Gordon explained to the media that he wants to play his youngsters more, it’s easy to think that the Rangers may skate all over the Isles tonight and come up with two points. However folks, remember that this is the Blueshirts and that they’ve lost games like this to the Isles before.

As such, Rangers’ head coach Tom Renney is keeping the same lineup he used on Saturday night in the team’s 2-0 shutout victory over the Ottawa Senators. This means that Aaron Voros and Dan Fritsche will once again be scratches.

Will He Actually Play and other Ranger Musings

As Sam Weinman reported in his blog, the New York Rangers have called up defenseman Bobby Sanguinetti in the event that defenseman Michal Rozsival cannot play tonight after suffering a facial injury in last night’s 2-1 shootout loss to the Buffalo Sabres.

The question that both Weinman and I are wondering is what does this say about Corey Potter? Potter played with the Blueshirts a few weeks ago and did just fine and yet, when the team is in a bind like they could be tonight, they potentially look to Sanguinetti. Yes, Sanguinetti is an all star in the AHL and leading the Hartford Wolf Pack with 20 points in 39 games, but is he ready to step in against a potentially potent offense in the Ottawa Senators?

Ranger Reading

Tonight, the New York Rangers (22-12-3) return from their two-day holiday break to take on the New Jersey Devils (19-11-3) at Madison Square Garden.

Luckily for the Blueshirts, the Devils played last night and got shutout by the Pittsburgh Penguins (19-12-4) so they may a bit tired. The Devils also haven’t scored a goal in regulation in seven period. On the other hand, that’s never stopped the Rangers from losing before so why should these be considered factors now?

The main note for tonight’s game is that defenseman Michal Rozsival is out tonight because of what the team is describing as family reasons. In his place will be Corey Potter.

A Brand New Day

First off, I hope you all had a happy and safe holiday, especially you New York Ranger fans out there who were looking to shake off Tuesday night’s terrible loss to the Washington Capitals.

Tomorrow night’s game against the New Jersey Devils should be looked at as a fresh start for the Rangers. Again,  they’re coming off a terrible collapse against the Caps’ and have displayed rather inconsistent hockey over the past month or so.

So what better way to shake off the cob webs and play the best hockey they can play than by beating their Hudson River rivals?
