In Trouble?

If the New York Rangers lose to the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight, the team will be in trouble.

That would put the Rangers at 3-8 in their last 11 and would more than likely still keep them out of the top eight in the Eastern Conference.

There is one major problem here: secondary scoring!

What About Sanguinetti?/Update 12:55PM

Throughout the pre-season, New York Ranger writers and fans have turned their attention to youngsters Matt Gilroy, Michael Del Zotto, Artem Anisimov, Evgeny Grachev, Chad Johnson and Enver Lisin. These players have stood out because they’re getting the job done, have shown a lot of poise and are making it extremely difficult on both coach Tortorella and the rest of Rangers’ management to cut them.

Lost in all of this is another Rangers’ youngster is desperately trying to make the team - Bobby Sanguinetti. The 21-year-old defenseman, drafted 21st overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, has had trouble impressing that powers that be due to the impressive play of defensemen Gilroy and Del Zotto.

While having a solid year with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the AHL last season, Sanguinetti has had trouble putting it together for the Blueshirts both in training camp and in pre-season games. While he has made some decent plays, he’s also looked tentative with the puck, a bit unsure of himself and has had a bit of trouble adjusting to the quickness of NHL-play.

Rangers’ News & Notes

Good afternoon folks. The New York Rangers played well last night and defeated the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 4-2 to go to 2-2-1 in the pre-season.

The team got strong performances from Marian Gaborik (let’s hope he can stay healthy) Enver Lisin, Artem Anisimov, Matt Gilroy, Ryan Callahan, and a few others. Again, I know it’s pre-season but good performances from these players now can help get them off on the right foot come next Friday night against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Rangers Reading Before Tonight’s Pre-Season Game Against The Wings

The New York Rangers continue their pre-season schedule with a game tonight against the Detroit Red Wings at Madison Square Garden. The two teams met last Friday night and the Blueshirts squandered a 2-0 lead in the third period en route to a 4-3 loss. We’ll see if there is a different result tonight on the Garden ice.

Great Day For the Blueshirts

All in all, you have to be pretty happy if you’re a New York Ranger fan today. They went out and resigned Dubi to a two-year deal and then went onto beat the Boston Bruins by a score of 5-2 in their first pre-season win of the season.

The Blueshirts got goals from Ales Kotalik (power play), Sean Avery, a highlight-reel shorthanded goal from Artem Anisimov, Enver Lisin and PA Parenteau. The team also got strong goaltending from Steve Valiquette and once again, Chad Johnson, who could certainly make things very interesting down in Hartford with the Wolf Pack if he gets a chance for a spot.

For more on the Rangers’ satisfying (I know, I know…it’s pre-season) win and the resigning of Brandon Dubinsky, check out the following links:

Not Terrible

Good afternoon folks. The New York Rangers lost their first pre-season game last night to the Boston Bruins by a score of 2-1.

Though they posted an ‘L’ in the standings, they played well enough to win, put plenty of pucks on net, and got a terrific look at their youngsters. Certainly a lot of positives to take from this as they move towards the regular season.

Rangers First Pre-Season Game Tonight!

Well, New York Ranger fans, it might be just a pre-season game but tonight, hockey will be played on the Garden ice against the Boston Bruins. All those days of complaining and whining about not having hockey have really come to an end and now, it’s time to focus on the 2009-2010 Blueshirts.

As most of you probably know, Marian Gaborik has felt some stiffness in his groin so the team is being extremely cautious with him (I would do if I was paying him millions of dollars). You also all know that Brandon Dubinsky still has not signed and that head coach John Tortorella went as far to say that the whole situation is “stupid”. Let’s hope that something gets worked out quickly and that Dubinsky smartens up and signs a one-year qualifying offer. This way, he can play his butt off, put up a bunch of points and earn and spanking new contract for next season.

Anyways, check links below for the latest New York Ranger news, notes and opinions from the team’s beat writers, bloggers, etc.:

A Letter to the 2009-2010 Rangers

I know that I posted a link from Scotty Hockey in my last blog but this is definitely worth it’s own separate post and deserves some attention:

Hello, and welcome to the New York Rangers,

There are some things you need to know before you get the 2009-2010 NHL season started as a member of the Broadway Blueshirts. I will attempt to lay them out for you to make your transition to New York easier. If you keep these in mind, your stay will be an enjoyable and, hopefully, productive one. Best of luck.

1- First and foremost, being a Ranger requires respect. Respect for your teammates. Respect for the jersey. Respect for the fans. Respect the Rangers. Everything else on this list falls under this dictum. Respect. It sounds simple, but it’s not. It’s a complete way of being that will require hard work but the payoff is virtually limitless.

2 - Always, ALWAYS have your teammate’s back. There is nothing worse than seeing a player get hit in a vulnerable position without retribution. That especially goes for your goaltender.

3 - I mentioned hard work. That is what is expected of you. Anything less - let up for just one moment of one shift - and the results would be disastrous. During that lapse a goal may be scored against the Rangers, or it may not. Either way, someone will notice. The Rangers are the most scrutinized NHL team not in Canada, both by the media and by the fans. You do not want to let up in this town. At the same time, even if things aren’t going your way - go without scoring for games at a time, whatever - if you are visibly working hard you will given a pass. You may look around at the fans by the ice and see the nice clothes, the Blackberries and the models, but don’t be fooled: this is a blue collar fanbase that expects and appreciates hard work.

Click here for more. Definitely worth checking out if you’re a True Blue Ranger fan.

Rangers Reading to Begin the Weekend

It’s here folks. Training camp is finally here and now, we can start talking about the action on the ice and in the locker rooms instead of talking about free agents, Marian Hossa, Chris Pronger, Martin Havlat, etc. It’s hockey time and what’s done is done.

Unfortunately for the New York Rangers, Brandon Dubinsky is not reporting to camp due to a contract holdout. I, along with many other Blueshirt fans I’m sure, never thought that it would come to this but here we are, beginning of training camp, and Dubinsky is not with the team. Let’s hope that both sides smarten up and hammer out a deal soon.

Rangers Reading on 9/11

A Special Word from Me: Good morning folks. For almost every American, today is a day we look back at what happened on 9/11. All of us were effected by it and still feel its impact today. So please remember what’s really important today and not let other things in life stress you out.

Back to Hockey: For the NHL, tomorrow marks the opening day of training camp. It’s a day that every hockey fan has been thinking about since the season ended, especially New York Ranger fans, who saw their team blow a 3-1 series lead in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.

Rangers Reading on a Wednesday Evening

Good evening folks and welcome back to another round of New York Rangers’ reading. It’s nice to see that beat reporters have stepped up their game and returned to the rinks to see what players are up to while also trying to see what really went on within the NHLPA. Good luck with that though from what the Leafs Lunch clip on XM NHL Home Ice, it seems like Paul Kelly was exactly the kind of guy this game needed. However, I don’t think we’re ever going to really know what went on at the closed-door meeting in Chicago.

Rangers Reading to Start the first week of September

Can you feel it folks? Rink doors across the U.S. are opening as NHL clubs take part in informal skates and prepare for training camps. All I can say is “It’s about time.”

With all the bad/awkward stuff that has taken place this summer such as the Marian Hossa contract, Martin Havlat on Twitter, all the changes in the Blackhawks front office and now, the ousting of Paul Kelly as the NHLPA boss, it will be nice to hear how players look on the ice, how the rosters are looking and more importantly, hearing about how they have prepared for the upcoming season.

Rangers Reading on a Rainy Friday

As has been for most of the summer, there isn’t too much going on in Rangerland. Just another rainy summer day as we all wait for hockey season to start.

One thing that did peak my interest is that Mark Everson of The New York Post writes about the Blueshirt’s and Devils interest in Boston’s Phil Kessel:

The Rangers are believed to have talked seriously with the Bruins about trading for Kessel, but not lately. At least two other teams are believed to have stepped up their bidding of late. Kessel is rehabbing from rotator cuff surgery, but may be ready to skate when camps open next month.

Click here for more on that. We’ll see if that turns into something but right now, I would not read too much into it.

Rangers Reading For the middle of the Week

Here we are on another hockey/Rangerless Wednesday afternoon with not too much going in on that neck of the woods. Right now, the hockey world is clearly focused on the Phoenix Coyotes situation and Team Canada’s Winter Olympic training camp, which has been great fodder for the hockey world this week. I’m looking forward to seeing what squad Canada will ice in February 2010, particularly which three goalies they will bring.

Grachev to play in NHL or AHL This Season and Rangers Reading

From Laurie at Beyond the Blueshirts:

It will likely come as a surprise to no one, but according to OHL Prospects, Evgeny Grachev’s time in the Ontario Hockey League is up after a single season.  According to the blog, the New York Rangers have already informed the Brampton Battalion that the 19-year old winger won’t be returning for a sophomore season, and will instead turn pro, playing in either the AHL or NHL.

Grachev, a Rangers 2008 third round draft pick (75th over all), finished second in team scoring for the Battalion in 2008-2009, leading all OHL freshmen in goals and points and earning OHL Rookie of the Year honors in the process.  Despite his strong North American debut, it’s likely the 6′3″ 202-pound winger will need to spend some time adjusting to the professional game with the Hartford Wolf Pack in the AHL before he earns a roster spot in New York.

Click here for more on Grachev.

Nice to Have Ranger News

Well, finally some rumblings in Rangerland, huh? First, Mark Messier is coming back to the Blueshirts as a special assistant to Glen Sather where he will learn the business and see what it takes to run a hockey team. Hmmm, should Mark go somewhere else for that?

Secondly, the team signed Vinny Prospal. He played for Rangers’ head coach John Tortorella two seasons ago with the Tampa Bay Lightning and posted 80 points. He’s a guy that will pick up a bunch of assists and be good for the team’s non-existent power play.

What I am wondering is what is going on with Brandon Dubinsky. For awhile, it seemed the team was intent on having Dubinsky as the No.1 center but with the signing of Prospal, who’s both a winger and centerman, one has to wonder what the team’s plan for Dubinsky is.

Rangers Reading on a Wednesday Afternoon

When I heard that Nikolai Zherdev was awarded close to $4 million in his salary arbitration hearing, I couldn’t believe it. Yes, he scored over 20 goals and had over 50 points but he was never good on a consistent basis and in the playoffs, he disappeared. In my books, that shouldn’t mean an increase in salary but I guess that’s just the way it goes sometimes, right? We’ll see what he does this upcoming season whether he’s in the NHL or KHL.

Rangers News, Notes and Opinions

Figured I’d change the wording around in the title to get your attention better. As has been most of the summer, not too much news floating around Rangerland these days besides the impending Nikolai Zherdev arbitration hearing. At this point, I’m ready to say good riddance to the Russian, who is asking for more money than he is worth, especially with the way he played this season. If he does not end up coming back to the Blueshirts, which team will be gullible enough to sign him?

I also think it’s pretty interesting that the New York Islanders decided to sign goaltender Martin Biron yesterday. It’s quite obvious that “franchise” netminder Rick DiPietro will not be ready to go come October and who knows how much longer after that. With Dwayne Roloson and Biron between the pipes, the Isles’ actually now have stability in net. Who would have thunk it?

Mid-Week Rangers Reading

We’ve come to the midway point of the week and unfortunately, not too much to report on when it comes to the Blueshirts.

As of right now, Nikolai Zherdev is headed for arbitration while Brandon Dubinsky remains in limbo. Head coach John Tortorella is a big fan of Dubi and will most likely want to give him a bigger role in the upcoming season. As for Zherdev, that’s a different story. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him skate off on another club this season whether it’s in the NHL or the KHL.

Rangers Reading on a Dog Day of Summer

As much as I love the summer, I really just want hockey season to be here. I miss attending New York Ranger home games, talking about how the team is doing with my Ranger/hockey-fan friends as well as my Ranger/hockey-media friends and watching live hockey on television. Again, the NHL Network does a tremendous job of providing terrific hockey content to get us hockey nuts through the summer but still, it’s just not the same.

Here are some New York Ranger links with news, notes and opinions to check out to help get you through this long day:
