Not Again

From Steve Zipay at Blue Notes:

Mats Sundin, perhaps becoming the Brett Favre of the NHL—-already saying he will not play for Sweden in the 2010 Olympics—-apparently has not totally ruled out an NHL comeback.

The Vancouver Province reported that Sundin—-the 38-year-old center who spurned the Rangers last December when they couldn’t clear enough cap room and the Canucks came up with more dough—-will be told by his agent J.P. Barry this week that four or five teams have inquired about a potential return, including the Canucks. A source told me that a Rangers executive (possibly Sundin’s one-time agent Mike Barnett) at one point asked about his intentions as well.

Canucks Fans: What Do You Think of This?

I found an interesting tidbit on Mats Sundin over on James Mirtle’s From The Rink Blog.

I have to admit that back when Sundin was an unsigned free agent, I was hoping and thinking that he would sign with the New York Rangers. However, based on the comments from Mr. Benjamin, I’m happy that he’s not with the Blueshirts.

What do you folks think out there in Canuckland?

They’ll Be Fine

Well, it’s official folks. Mats Sundin has found a new home and it’s not on Broadway.

As reported by TSN, Sundin has signed a one-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks. This is someone that the New York Rangers could have used but if you think about it, with a 22-11-2 record, the team must be doing something right.

Yes, the team relies on their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to bail them out a lot and yes, they are primarily a defense-first team. However, these are two elements that have allowed the Blueshirts to be successful the past three seasons.

All About Two Points

The New York Rangers hope to extend their win streak to three tonight when they take on the Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center.

The Blueshirts are coming off an impressive 3-1 win last night over the Anaheim Ducks, getting goals from Chris Drury, Nigel Dawes and Nikolai Zherdev. The team also got another strong performance from their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who stopped 19 of 20 shots.

It doesn’t appear that the whole Mats Sundin situation is a distraction to the team as all they are focused on is winning.

Christmas Could Come Early

According to Vancouver Canucks’ General Manager Mike Gillis, Mats Sundin will have his decision by Thursday.

All I can say is, and I think the rest of the hockey world will agree with me, it’s about time. Since last season ended, all anyone could talk about was “What is Mats Sundin going to do?” “Is he going to retire?” “Is he going to stay with the Toronto Maple Leafs?” “Is he going to be a Montreal Canadien, Vancouver Canuck, Philadelphia Flyer, New York Ranger, etc.?” “Will he really just be a rent-a-player?”

That question will finally be answered on Thursday and right now, it’s tough to say what he is going to decide.

Intrigued

I know that many of you New York Ranger fans out there were certainly intrigued by reports that Mats Sundin had selected the Blueshirts as the team he wanted to play for this season.

However, Sam Weinman, Rangers’ beat writer for The Journal News, reported that Sundin’s agent, J.P. Barry, said in an e-mail that the big Swede has yet to make a decision but at the same time, noted that the Blueshirts have expressed their interest.

The plot thickens folks. It will be interesting to see what happens in the next couple of days because it’s a rematch of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals for Mats: the New York Rangers vs. the Vancouver Canucks, who already offered him a two-year deal worth $20 million.

Is He Worth It?

As I’m sure all of you New York Ranger fans are now aware, Rangers’ GM Glen Sather will be sitting down with Mats Sundin on Saturday.

I want to hear your thoughts on the following items:

- Would Sundin be worth it to the Rangers?

- Who would you be willing to give up to sign Sundin?

- Do you think he’d sign for two years?
