With yesterday’s announcement of a new hockey radio show hosted by the great Greg Wyshysnki (Puck Daddy) and Jeff Marek (Rogers Sportsnet), I figured now would be a good time to give you folks some more information from the show.
I was able to do just that by reaching out to Marek, who is a great friend of the blog. Marek took time out of his busy schedule to tell us how the idea came up to do a show and what the show will be aiming to do on a daily bais.
PH: You recently announced that you will be cohosting a new hockey radio show with Greg Wyshynski, a.k.a Puck Daddy. When and how did you and Greg come up with this brilliant idea?
JM: I don’t know about brilliant just yet, we haven’t even done a single show. I may end up driving this one right in the ditch. Honestly, it came out of a casual Monday afternoon conversation sometime in September. We’re talking about how the Puck Daddy Radio show was no longer on The Score and how I wasn’t doing a daily radio show for the first time in about 10 years and it kinda’ became obvious that we should try to find a way to come together on a program. The only challenge was getting Sportsnet and Yahoo! Sports to get together to do a deal. Turns out it wasn’t much of a challenge at all, both sides were eager and although it took a little while to make it happen there were no major stumbling blocks in the whole process.
PH: What goals do you and Greg have when it comes to the show? How do you plan on accomplishing them?
JM: Not sure we have any goals other than to provide a daily podcast focussed mainly on the news of the day, different opinions and interesting guests. It’s me and Greg, hockey headlines, guests and debates. Nice thing about doing it with Wysh is we both love a good scrap. And doing this as a podcast gives us certain liberties that traditional radio wouldn’t provide. Oh wait, maybe we do have a goal - we’ll try to keep the pro wrestling references to a minimum. Ryan Lambert puts the over under for each show at 5.5. I think we can beat that.
If you are a hockey fan and like Greg Wyshynski, a.k.a. “Puck Daddy”, and Jeff Marek of Rogers Sportsnet, then you will be excited to know that the two puck personalities will be teaming up to do a daily radio show beginning next week:
After various and sundry delays, our new daily hockey radio show “Marek vs. Wyshynski” will debut on Monday, Nov. 14, streaming live from 2-3 p.m. ET. It’s a joint venture between Yahoo! Sports and Sportsnet, and Marek and I can’t thank these giant conglomerates enough for finding a way to make this work. (And for using the cigar and sunglasses picture in the logo teaser; hope Bob McCown isn’t angered.)
It will run Monday through Friday throughout the NHL season and into the offseason. It will stream live on Puck Daddy and on Sportsnet daily. It will be downloadable as a podcast on iTunes and on Sportsnet.ca.
Like the old show, it’s all about interaction. We’ll be speaking to the most interesting people in hockey, from Hall of Famers to beat writers to bloggers. We’ll be debating the hottest topics in the NHL and beyond. We’ll be answering your tweets and emails — official hashtag #MvsW. I’m @wyshynski and he’s @jeffmarek. Like Puck Daddy, it’s all about community, the game and trying to squeeze as much fun out of this nonsense as possible. Oh, and bringing you daily Puck Headlines. That too.

While I have done many an e-mail interview with this particular hockey personality, I finally had the honor and privilege to speak with this man over the phone today regarding his new role at Rogers Sportsnet.
Many of you puckheads know who this man is, especially if you are from Canada or you read one of his many Tweets on Twitter. What you may not know, however, is that Jeff Marek is no longer with Hockey Night in Canda or Hockey Night in Canada Radio, an outlet that he made his home for the past few seasons.
“My contract expired with CBC,” Jeff Marek said. “Scott Moore, a former boss of mine at CBC, and now an executive in the hockey department at Roger Sportsnet, came to me and told me what he had in mind for Sportsnet’s hockey department for the next five to ten years and how I can grow within the company.”
It was simply an offer that Marek could not refuse.
“It was a fantastic offer for me to be involved with television, radio, digital and print,” Marek said.
I’ve been really luck to do e-mail interviews with a lot of great hockey personalities.
Today is no different as Jeff Marek of CBC was kind enough to take time out of his hectic schedule to tell us about how he got into the game, how he got into working in hockey for a living and his current thoughts on the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Take it away, Jeff:
PH: How did you get into hockey?
JM: Like everyone else here, I grew up a hockey fan and have never known a world without hockey in it. Not just NHL but junior, minor, Euro, roller (was a HUGE fan of the RHI; where have you gone Toronto Planets? I went to every game) – all of it.
But to be honest, I never thought I’d be involved in a professional capacity with hockey. I went to University of Guelph with aims at doing my PhD and becoming an English professor, which many have pointed out is ironic considering how I constantly butcher our language. After getting my B.A in ’95, I took a summer job in the promotions department of a sports radio station (FAN 590) in Toronto and that’s where it began.
Year after year, I put off the PhD and stuck it out learning radio. Within a year, I had a weekend overnight show on the air with George Stroumboulopoulos (now host of The Hour) and Bob Mackowyz Jr (morning host for CBC Radio 2) called “Game”. That’s where it began.
