Betts Re-signs with Philly

From Tim Panaccio at CSNPhilly.com:

He’s played only 39 games this season because twice he dislocated his right shoulder.

But that was more than enough games for the Flyers to realize that Blair Betts might be the best penalty killer they’ve had in orange ‘n black since Keith Primeau.

The 29-year-old Betts has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $1.4 million –  $700,000 annually against the salary cap.

Bye, Bye Bettsy

From Scotty Hockey:

Puck Central picked up on some tweets that Blair Betts will be trying out for the Flyers.

Well, that sucks.

Not for Bettsy, he certainly deserves a shot to stay in the NHL and it is a damn shame that the Rangers brought in a coach who believes that Henrik Lundqvist can take care of the defensive zone all by himself. Bitter much? Yes, yes I am. He was my favourite Ranger, after all.

All Bettsy did was give his heart and soul to the team, night in and night out - something very (VERY) few Rangers have done over the last two seasons. I still believe that he did more to deserve a letter on his chest than any of the shmos who wore one last season. After the idiot Brashear knocked him out, the Caps came back and scored two power play goals the next game. Coincidence? Not at all. But what’s done is done and Bettsy’s Ranger career is over.

Click here for more from our good pal Scotty. He makes a lot of valid points regarding Betts’s value.

Not Bad

The New York Rangers went into the NHL All-Star break last night with a 4-2 victory over the Anaheim Ducks.

The team got strong performances from Henrik Lundqvist (not a surprise), Scott Gomez (1 goal and 1 assist), Markus Naslund (1 goal and 1 assist), Blair Betts (blocked a few shots and scored a shorthanded goal) as well as from their special teams, as the team scored two power play goals and two shorthanded goals.

With the victory, the Blueshirts head into the break with a 28-16-4 record, good enough for 60 points and the top spot in the Atlantic Division for now. As such, as inconsistent as this team has been, Blueshirt fans really cannot complain too much.

Underappreciated

In the Rangers’ 2-1 shootout victory over the Ottawa Senators last night, players such as Chris Drury, Markus Naslund, Nikolai Zherdev (with the exception of the lone shootout goal), Brandon Dubinsky or even Dan Girardi were not the team’s best players. Far from it, in fact.

In my eyes, it was Blair Betts, Fredrik Sjostrom and Lauri Korpikoski that shined as they got the team back in the game by scoring a goal in the third period. Not only that, but they kept the game simple, something that the other lines have not learned how to do yet.

Close but No Cigar for the Flyers

The New York Rangers squeeked by the Philadelphia Flyers 4-3 for their fourth win of the season thanks to a dominant first period.

The rest of the game? Eh, not so much.
