Which Sean Avery Will it Be This Season?

When Sean Avery arrived on Broadway back in February of 2007, there were many questions surrounding the pest.

What could he do offensively? Could he control himself and not take unnecessary penalties? Could he get under an opposing team’s skin?

The answer to all those questions was a resounding yes and he strutted himself from then until May of 2008. He then went onto the Dallas Stars for about half a season before returning to the bright lights of New York and being the player he was when he first came to the Rangers.

This past season was up and down as he struggled a bit offensively (31 points in 69 games) and found himself in John Tortorella’s doghouse every once in awhile. Some games, he was ever present and other games, he disappeared.

Avery has to get back to being the player has always been but do it within the confines of the game. For someone who is a pest, the man can do things with the puck and create offense and be effective on the defensive end of the game.

If Avery can do those things this season, Torts will give him plenty of ice time and put him on a line that can use his offense, tenacity and spirit. On the other hand, if Avery does not play his game, he’ll find himself riding the bench or worse, being a healthy scratch.

Which Avery do you think we’ll see this upcoming season? Will he be an effective player? Will he show that he belongs on Broadway and that he deserves to play night in and night out?

What are your thoughts?
