This is something that many people in the hockey world are wondering close to two months into the NHL season.
The Ducks currently sit second to last in both the Western Conference and NHL with a 6-12-4 record. The team currently has the same number of points as the lowly New York Islanders and is just one point ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets.
For a team that has one of the top scoring threats in the entire league and boast an elite netminder between the pipes, the results so far have been quite underwhelming to say the least. In fact, the team has been so underwhelming that one has to wonder what gives.
For starters, the team’s top line of Corey Perry, Ryan Getzlaf and Bobby Ryan has been extremely quiet through the team’s first 23 games. The line has combined for just 21 goals and on many nights, has not generated the kind of scoring opportunities that they did last season.
Secondly, the club’s defense has been quite porous this season. The Ducks are 23rd in the league in goals against and are allowing just over 3 goals game.
Speaking of goals against, Jonas Hiller, the club’s No.1 goaltender, has not been himself this season. In 20 games, the 29-year-old is 5-10-4 with a 3.22 goals against average, a .897 save percentage and 1 shutout.
With the lackluster performance of the Ducks so far, it is easy to say that team head coach Randy Carlyle is on the hot seat. This is a team that used to consistently get good offense, play solid and tight defense and get the goaltending they needed to win hockey games.
This season, however, none of that has happened for the Ducks and the time might be right for a change. Things have gotten worse and the team has yet to take a step forward just two months into the season.
If things continue to go badly for the Ducks, one has to think that a change will be made somewhere, right?
