Well-Shaped Roster Getting It Done

With the New York Rangers up 1-0 in their second round series over the Washington Capitals, it is easy to see that the Blueshirts are finally doing the right thing when it comes to shaping their roster.

This postseason is the example of that. The team and its head coach, John Tortorella, really want their youngsters to thrive and right now, several of them are doing just that.

However, the one that everyone is focused on heading into tonight’s Game 2 is Chris Kreider. Kreider, coming off a first star of the game performance in which he picked-up a goal and an assist, is showing the team and the rest of the NHL why he belongs in the league.

In the team’s 3-1 win in Game 1, Kreider scored his second game winning goal of the playoffs and showed how he can make a positive impact for this hockey club. At just 21 years of age, it is an impressive start and one that needs to continue if the Blueshirts want to keep on having success in the postseason.

The team was also smart to sign free-agent Brad Richards during the offseason. When it comes to the postseason, Richards is a big-time performer and in Game 1, he was able to get an insurance marker just 90-seconds after Kreider made it 2-1.

One also cannot forget about the acquisition of defenseman Ryan McDonagh in the summer of 2009 when the Rangers traded Scott Gomez to the Montreal Canadiens for Chris Higgins and McDonagh. McDonagh led the team in ice time in Game 1 with over 25 minutes played and also assisted on the Rangers’ first goal of the game by Artem Anisimov.

For the Rangers to win tonight, their well-shaped roster will have to do exactly what they did in Game 1. They allowed just 18 shots, got timely goal-scoring from Kreider and Brad Richards, and did a great job of shutting down the Capitals’ big guns.

Should the Rangers play the same way they did in Game 1 and their well-built roster comes through when they need to, it could be a 2-0 series lead for the Blueshirts heading into a rowdy Verzion Center for Game 3 on Wednesday night.
