In the dog days of summer, many NHL general managers and their teams are waiting and looking.
Waiting and looking to sign a free agent, make a trade or do anything they can to make their team better. While that’s what most GM’s are doing this off-season, one has to wonder what New York Rangers’ GM Glen Sather is trying to do with his hockey team.
Yes, he went out and signed/re-signed players such as Marty Biron, Derek Boogaard, Vinny Prospal, Erik Christensen, Vinny Prospal and Daniel Girardi. While that’s great, with the exception of the somewhat questionable Boogaard signing, one has to wonder what’s next for Sather.
I know I’ve written blogs about this before but that’s only because Sather appears to be doing alittle too much waiting when it comes to this off-season:
- Defenseman Marc Staal should be locked up by now. Sure, Sather said that he would match any offer sheet that was thrown at Staal but does the team really want to let it get to that point?
- Why hasn’t Sather looked to acquire/acquired a proven point-producer? Last season, the Blueshirts struggled to score goals and relied too heavily on Marian Gaborik to put the puck in the net. While Gaborik did his part, no one esle seemed to step up and help.
- Does Sather have a plan to send down defenseman Wade Redden? Ranger fans certainly hope so but they’d like to hear Sather admit that he made a mistake by signing the defenseman in 2008 to a ridiculous contract?
I do not mean to sound like a Sather basher because for the most part, since joining KK, I haven’t had too much to say about Sather. However, Blueshirt fans want their team to be better and Sather needs to figure out a plan to make that happen.
