With Arthur Staple reporting that New York Rangers’ captain Chris Drury will be out for six weeks after having his knee scoped, it is time for Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Callahan to lead this team into the playoffs.
There are many out there that question why Drury was named captain in the first place but despite not producing, he did try and play hard, he blocked shots, he was great on the penalty kill and he was the consumate professional. Even head coach John Tortorella said he was tired of hearing negative things about Drury:
Tortorella on Drury: “It pisses me off that some things come out about Chris Drury, about him thinking he might be out of the lineup and thinking he’s given in here a little bit…It bothered me. Because he’s not built that way, and we all know that.”
With that in mind, it is time for Dubinsky and Callahan to lead this team both as leaders on the ice and off the ice. When it comes to the on-ice part, they will have to continue to play hard, play on special teams, kill penalties, hit, block shots and produce. The last part is extremely important considering how quiet Marian Gaborik has been.
Off the ice, Dubinsky and Callahan need to speak up and say the right things to get the Rangers’ back on the winning track. Since the team has not won in five games, I would imagine that the timing is perfect for a pep talk from Dubinsky and Callahan.
Once again, it is time for the Rangers’ youngsters to rise up to the challenge and get this team into the Stanley Cup playoffs come April.
