As was reported here on Kukla’s Korner, Sam Weinman’s Rangers Report, Steve Zipay’s Blue Notes, Andrew Gross’s Ranger Rants and his own blog of course, John Dellapina is leaving the New York Rangers beat to go work for the National Hockey League.
He will certainly be missed by many of the beat writers on this team, especially Sam Weinman of The Journal News’ Steve Zipay of Newsday, who not only remember Dellapina for his hockey knowledge, but his knowledge on the game of life.
“He’s become a good friend a good friend who I could consult on everything from the intricacies of the collective bargaining agreement to raising two kids,” Weinman said in his blog yesterday.
Zipay points out in his farewell blog to Dellapina that Dell was not just good at being a hockey writer, but was also good at being a good friend on the Rangers’ beat.
“Over the last few years, John and I had some laughs during the grind on the road, in rental cars, at hotel pools, in arena corridors and dining rooms and press boxes and occasionally in a watering hole. I recall numerous quality discussions on life and music and sports and the newspaper business and politics and family,” Zipay said in his blog last night.
Andrew Gross, former Rangers beat writer for The Journal News and now the team’s beat writer for The Record also bid farewell to Dellapina by saying that he was “well-educated, both in terms of hockey and life in general,” a common theme that’s been used when describing one of the league’s top hockey beat reporters.
With hockey coverage dwindling in terms of newspapers in the U.S., the game is certainly losing one of the better ones. However, Dellapina left Rangers and hockey fans some encouraging words in his last blog for The Daily News:
“In a way, I’ll be doing the same thing - trying to spread the hockey gospel to those who sadly have yet to get it while providing all of you hard cores with as much of the game as you can stand,” Dellapina said.
And to us Ranger and hockey fans out there, that is all that should matter. So thanks, John, for providing New York Ranger fans with top-notch coverage of the team and we look forward to hearing from you as the new Director of Media Relations for the NHL.
