UPDATE: As Paul posted previously, Alexander Frolov has signed a 1-year deal with the New York Rangers. The deal is worth $3 million. As I said in the post below, let’s see what he can do in one year.
According to many sports outlets last night, the New York Rangers are on the verge of signing UFA Alexander Frolov to a deal.
I’m not quite sure what to think if the Blueshirts sign him. Here are some positives:
- It is easy to see that Frolov has point-producing abilities. Starting from the 2005-06 season, he has had season totals of 54, 71, 67, 59 and 51 points. This would easily put him among the top three point-producers on the Blueshirts, which isn’t exactly hard to do.
- Frolov would help out the power play. The Rangers clearly need another sniper with the man-advantage and Frolov could become another player the team towards to besides Marian Gaborik.
- Frolov would help provide some depth. He’d fit in nicely on the team’s second line and again, would bring scoring to it.
However, Blueshirt fans are probably more concerned about the negative that he is consistently inconsistent. Some nights he looks great and other nights, it’s like he’s not even there.
Could this become something similar to what Nikolai Zherdev was for the Rangers a few seasons ago? Many questioned Zherdev’s desire to win hockey games and if you become that kind of player in New York, fans will ride you right out of town.
If he signs a deal, one year may be the way to go as kind of a wait-and-see kind of deal. If he plays well, works hard and fits in, then you can sign him to an extension. Remember, he’s only 28 years old so he still may have a lot to offer.
What do you folks think?
