Talking Playoff Hockey with Russ Cohen

Russ Cohen, one of the authors of 100 Ranger Greats, a terrific hockey host on XM NHL Home Ice and owner of Sportsology, was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to do an e-mail interview regarding the Stanley Cup playoffs. Take it away Russ!

PH: What do you think of the Stanley Cup Playoffs up to this point?
RC: They’ve been unpredictable and very exciting. Plenty of star power, plenty of upsets, and a lot of intense games that have a physical compnent with some offense mixed in.

PH: Why were the Philadelphia Flyers able to upset the New Jersey Devils in the first round?
RC: Why were the Devils so disappointing when it mattered the most? The Devils defense wasn’t up to the task. The Flyers forwards had their way with them in the crease and in the corners. The Devils power play was horrendous and their main offensive players like Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk didn’t produce and Flyers goalie Brian Boucher rose to the occasion.

PH: What are your thoughts on the play of the San Jose Sharks? They were finally able to shake off some playoff demons but do they have what it takes to get to the Stanley Cup Finals?
RC: I still think they will come up short, Patrick. I don’t know if they have the toughness to make it to the Cup and sometimes I question goaltender Evgeni Nabokov in big games. With all of that said they have done very well up to this point but the time off will hurt them in Game 1 of the Conference Finals, that’s for sure.

PH: Quick, look into your crystal ball: which team will win the Cup when all is said and done? Why?
RC: I will go with the Canucks because I finally see them playing their game and it seems like Roberto Luongo is ready to go on a tear. The Sedin’s line may be the best in the playoffs.

PH: Tell us about the Hockey Prospect Radio show that you host.
RC: Well Shane Malloy and I co-host it and we’ve just expanded the show to two hours on Saturdays 9-11 et, Home Ice XM 204, Sirius 208. We cover all 30 teams, we highlight the Memorial Cup and we have the most comprehensive NHL Draft shows in the business.

PH: What are you looking forward to most regarding this year’s NHL Draft?
RC: The venue, I like the Staples center and with the Kings on the rise it will be fun to see how crazy the fans are. I want to see if Taylor Hall or Tyler Seguin goes #1 and I’m curious what the Bruins will do with their two picks and what the Rangers will do with their 10th overall pick. It’s never a dull moment and I usually have a live radio show in the collectibles show area which is always a lot of fun and that podcast can be heard at http://www.sportsology.net
