Talking Hockey Jerseys with Mike Ross of NHL Home Ice

If you are a fan of or listen to NHL Home Ice on Sirius/XM radio, than you know that the staff is big into wearing hockey jerseys to work.

One such staffer that was kind of enough to “talk” to us about his hockey jerseys was Mike Ross, a.k.a. “Rossy”, of Hockey This Morning.

PH: First off, how many hockey jerseys do you own?
MR: I own 31 hockey jerseys and a host of other football and baseball jerseys.

PH: Which jersey that you own is your favorite? Why?
MR: Have to go with my Senators, heritage wool sweater. I love it because it’s such a true throwback, given the old logo on it and the fact that it is truly a sweater.

PH: Which jersey that you own do you get a lot of flack for owning? Why?
MR: Well, around Toronto, it’s any of my Senators jerseys. Ottawa has suffered many playoff losses at the hands of the Maple Leafs so, they have scoreboard on me.

PH: Would you like to share any interesting stories that you have regarding one of the jerseys that you own?
MR: Well, growing up in Ottawa, I played my minor hockey for the “Sandy Hill Minor Hockey Association”. Many years after I had grown up and left Ottawa, my cousin, who was a volunteer at my childhood rink noticed they were getting rid of a bunch of old jerseys. He sifted through the pile and with the blessing of the league president, took home a couple of jerseys. A few weeks later, he presented me with the home black and gold and the road white, black and gold #8 sweaters I had worn in my last year of playing minor hockey. They hang proudly in my jersey closet. And one day soon, when my man-cave is complete, it will have a locker in which all my jerseys will hang, including my Sandy Hill sweaters.

PH: How did you guys come up with “Jersey Friday” at NHL Home Ice?
MR: It started one day during our very first season. A few of us were talking about something we could do to create a little bit of bonding among the staff and decided on Jersey Friday. To be honest, I forget what sweater I wore. But I do remember Jim Gordon wearing a Seals jersey and Todd Lewis sporting his red Habs sweater.

PH: What are your current favorite jerseys in the NHL? Why?
MR: There are 2 sweaters that I do not own but would love to:

Firstly, the old NYR Statue of Liberty (dark) jersey and secondly, the new Minnesota 3rd jersey with the “Minnesota” written in cursive.

What’s your favorite sweater?

Mine is a 1954 replica red wings wool sweater with a #7 on the back that Terrible Ted autographed while I wore it. I love that shirt.
