I decided to reach out to Scotty from Scotty Hockey to talk about the New York Rangers’ recent struggles.
PH: Why are the Rangers struggling so much this season?
SH: They are a deeply flawed team led by a deeply flawed coach.
PH: What do you make of Gilroy’s demotion to the AHL?
SH: It is Tortorella lashing out at the easiest target that isn’t himself. The rookie that let Byfuglien go to the net and score the game winner gets the boot because the coach won’t blame himself for not being able to motivate his team or because the overpriced veterans are completely incompetent. It is good for Hobey because he should get a bit of humility and a lot of confidence playing in the bus league.
PH: Do you think Chris Drury is the right captain for this team? Is he right for this team in general?
SH: Absolutely not and I never said he was. The Rangers need a cult of personality to captain the team, especially one made up of overpaid, under-performing mercenaries and clueless kids. I love that Dru steps his game up against the Islanders, but that simply isn’t enough. He would be fine as a $3 million per year third line center who is great on the penalty kills. As a $7 million top six forward, he is an abject failure.
PH: What do the Blueshirts need to do in order to turn it around?
SH: Fire Sather, rid themselves of the contracts of Redden, Rozy, Dru and Brash any way possible and hit rock bottom to get good draft picks to supplement the corps of young Rangers that we already have in Cally, Dubi, Grachev, Stepan, MDZ, Hobey and McDonagh. But since that won’t happen, back on Earth the Rangers need to shed a little bit of salary to pick up another hired gun at the deadline to score a few goals so we can make the first round of the playoffs where we will lose but Dolan will get his additional revenue.
