Rangers to Battle The Thrashers Tonight

Tonight at Madison Square Garden, the New York Rangers take on the Atlanta Thrashers in what will be a good test for the Blueshirts to see if they can keep up the consistency they’ve displayed in their last three games.

The Blueshirts will once again be looking to the likes of Brandon Dubinsky, Artem Anisimov, Ryan Callahan, Sean Avery, Ruslan Fedotenko and others to provide offense while relying on the team’s defensive corps to do their job. Considering the way things have gone the last three games, it’s safe to say that these folks will do their part.

The question, however, remains who will be in goal tonight for the Blueshirts? It’s easy to see that Henrik Lundqvist is on somewhat of a roll after his excellent play this weekend against the Boston Bruins and New Jersey Devils. With that said, however, it’d be easy to use back-up goaltender Martin Biron in a game like this and save Lundqvist for Friday night against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Andrew Gross of Ranger Rants said the following in his blog today regarding tonight’s starting goaltender:

Coach John Tortorella would not announce his starting goalie for tonight but I’d be falling down shocked if it wasn’t Henrik Lundqvist. Projecting ahead, it’d probably be logical to think Marty Biron will get his second start of the season right where he got his first start, Saturday at Toronto after the Rangers host the Hurricanes on Friday night. Of course, that being the easy thing to presume probably means we’ll all be wrong on that, perhaps Tortorella follows through on his desire to get Biron comfortable playing at the Garden and starts him Friday while Lundqvist gets Saturday’s game.

Gross makes a good point here, especially regarding Biron’s next start. With that said, I also agree that the team needs to get Biron acclimated to playing at home and tonight could be a good opportunity to do so.

It should be a good game and if the Blueshirts come out on top, that will be four in a row and a good indication that the team is doing something right without some of their better forwards.

Let’s go Thrashers!

Sorry—I had to. wink

In all seriousness, this is a game that both teams really need to win. Atlanta has dropped some pretty nasty games recently, and a win tonight may very well “right the ship,” as it were. Meanwhile, NYR needs to prove that they can go without their top players for an extended period of time. What better way for the Rangers to do that than increase their win streak to four games?
