Goal Line Report

Quiet in Rangerland

Good afternoon folks. I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday weekend in the States.

As of right now, all is quiet in Rangerland. Yes, defenseman Dan Girardi has filed for arbitration and yes, things are still stalled when it comes to defenseman Marc Staal. Obviously, most Blueshirt fans are more concerned with getting Staal in the fold for the next several years as he has been the team’s most consistent defenseman since joining the league in the 2007-08 season.

When it comes to Girardi, it’s a tough call. There has been a steady decline in his play but with a new season on the horizon, may be he can turn things around and be one of the club’s better defenseman.

One thing both Girardi and Staal need to do is increase their offense. Girardi has produced for this team before and according to head coach John Tortorella, there is so much potential for Staal to do the same.

I wish there was more to report but right now, it’s quiet. I will make sure to stay on top of things for you puckheads out there.

How is it a tough call on Girardi?  I so sick of people ragging on him for no reason.  I don’t understand how you can say there has been a steady decline in his play.  That just isn’t true.  Here are his stats from the past three years:

Yr, GP, G, A, P, +/-, TOI, ES TOI, PK TOI, PP TOI, Hits, BkS, MSs, GV, TK, Shots, S%

‘10, 82,  6,  18, 24,  -2, 53, 21:28, 17:37, 3:32, 0:19, 178, 180, 38, 47, 37, 108, 5.6
‘09, 82,  4,  18, 22, -14, 53, 21:31, 16:47, 2:26, 2:18, 207,  82, 59, 31, 40, 122, 3.3
‘08, 82, 10, 18, 28,  0, 14, 21:11, 15:50, 2:32, 2:49, 179, 123, 56, 43, 51, 147, 6.8

Where exactly is this decline you speak of? If you look closely you can see that he actually increased his offensive output last year (from the prior year) while getting practically no PP time and obviously being put in a more defensive role.  He was put out there with Staal to shut down the oppositions best players.  At other times he had to deal with being partnered with Redden, who is someone you can honestly say is in steady decline, and Del Zotto, who is a great offensive d-man but his defensive zone play was questionable at best (he is a rookie and that is expected but it is his partner that has to deal with it).

Among defensemen in the league, Dan was 12th in hits, 6th in blocked shots, 23rd in takeaways, tied for 35th in Shooting %.  In the top 60 for ES TOI, 12th in shorthanded time (led the team in PK time for the 7th ranked PK in the league).

I don’t see this steady decline.  You’re not going to find a defenseman in the open market that will do as much as him for anywhere near what his salary will be.

Right on Capwood. I’ve been fighting this battle as well. Somehow, on a team with Redden and Roszival, and when speaking defensive play, MDZ, Girardi is under-appreciated. Maybe too few play the game and therefore do not appreciate solid defensemen and the impact they have on a game. Girardi plays fundamentally sound, and has few holes in his game - perhaps his best attribute. More than any other position, holes in a defenseman’s play are exploited. He could be more consistent, I will grant you; but at his age, skill level and maturity, he is immensely valuable to this organization.
