This weekend, we got to learn about WFAN and NHL Live Producer, Brian Monzo through an e-mail interview. Today, Brian was kind enough to respond to a short trade deadline questionnaire:
PH: What shoud Rangers’ GM Glen Sather be looking to do at the trade deadline this season?
BM: You always want to hear ‘go get someone that could help the team.’ I really don’t think that is what he should be doing. He should be looking to deal players like Vinny Prospal and Olli Jokinen and getting drafts. Players like Andy Sutton and Jordan Leopold are getting moved for 2nd round picks. That being said Prospal and Jokinen may get 1st round picks, or 2nd round picks and prospects. The Rangers are not going anywhere far this season and should be playing for the future. As far as what he will do, we will find out.
PH: If you were Sather, who would you be willing to trade? Why?
BM: As I said earlier, Vinny Prospal and Olli Jokinen. I would see what the market for Dan Girardi and Matt Gilroy are, but wouldn’t be looking to move them.
PH: What do you think of the Alex Auld move? Is Valiquette officially done in the NHL?
BM: He is an established back-up. I was a fan of Chad Johnson and think he will have a good NHL career. As far as Valiquette goes, I sure hope not. He is a good guy and has shown he can play in this league. A team like the Ducks or Stars could use a good veteran back-up.
PH: Any other thoughts on the Blueshirts that you would like to share?
BM: I love the depth with the young players. I really hope they start to realize that Brandon Dubinsky is a good 2nd line center and don’t continue to try and push him as a top-line center. I think they will make the playoffs, but not go past the first round.
