Power Play Hurts the Rangers in 3-2 loss to the Wings

New York Rangers’ fans probably figured that tonight’s game would come down to the team’s power play and they were certainly right.

Unfortunately for Blueshirt fans, the game did not end well as the team lost 3-2 to the Detroit Red Wings at the Joe Louis Arena while wasting a 5-on-3 turning into a 5-on-4 for the last few minutes of the hockey game. It was a game in which the Rangers’ fired 47 shots on Wings’ goaltender Jimmy Howard but could not get the one behind Howard that would tie the game.

You cannot blame this game on Rangers’ netminder Martin Biron. Biron was stellar between the pipes for the Blueshirts in making 32 saves and once again giving his team every opportunity to win a hockey game.

And yes, the team did get goals from Derek Stepan and Brandon Dubinsky but where was Marian Gaborik? Where was Wojtek Wolski? Where was Vinny Prospal? And again, where the heck was the power play?

These guys, with the exception of Prospal because of how long he was out for, are going to have to answer the call if this team expects to have any kind of success come playoff time, if they get in.

As for the power play, there have been no answers. The team wastes a lot of shot opportunities, often deciding to pass instead while also missing the net a lot. The coaching staff needs to try and figure out a way to get it working because the team is going to need it to be successful down the stretch.

The loss brings the Rangers’ winless streak to five games. Again folks, the team is not playing poorly. Rather, the team is failing to execute when it matters the most and that should not be put on head coach John Tortorella. That should be put on the players.

The team will not play again until Friday night in Atlanta against the Atlanta Thrashers. That gives the team plenty of time to work on their power play, their offense and also gives goaltender Henrik Lundqvist even more time to get his game back where he and the team want it to be.

This winless streak needs to end sooner rather than later or else the Blueshirts may find themselves out of a playoff spot heading into the most crucial months and games of the season.
