This is not the kind of effort you want your team to give when you’re missing two of your better players.
For the New York Rangers, this effort caused the team to lose to the Colorado Avalanche by a score of 3-1. It’s even a surprise that the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of two periods.
What’s alarming is that the team’s defense continues to be porous as they allowed 34 shots tonight. While Henrik Lundqvist is a world-class goaltender, letting him face close to 35 shots a night and not supporting him with enough defense or scoring could wear on him pretty quickly.
It’s also alarming that the team’s penalty kil continues to struggle as Avs’ forward Chris Stewart had 2 power play goals tonight. Since the team is missing their top penalty killer in Chris Drury, the rest of the penalty killing unit (s) is going to have to step up. Not only that, but the team needs to play with a bit more discipline and learn to stay out of the box.
While the team is only 1-2-1 and it is still early in the season, the team’s play over the last three games against the New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs and Colorado Avalanche is a bit worrisome. The injuries only exascerbate the problems even further.
With games on the road against the Toronto Maple Leafs (Thursday night) and Boston Bruins (Saturday night) and a game at home against the New Jersey Devils (Sunday night) on tap for the Blueshirts this week, head coach John Tortorella needs to figure out a way to get his team going. The question, however, is what can he do?
Again, I know it’s early in the season but right now, the feelings about this team cannot be too good.
