It was just four weekends ago that the New York Rangers were down 2-0 in third period and managed to come back and win the game 3-2 in a shootout over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
It was deja vu all over again tonight as the Rangers were down 2-0 in the third to the Boston Bruins, only to tie the game in the third period with 53 seconds to go and win it in a shootout thanks to a goal from captain Chris Drury.
Welcome to the new NHL folks.
It used to be that when a team got the lead, they would hook and interfere their way to a victory. However, with the new rules in place, teams can no longer do that and you see outcomes such as tonight.
The Bruins were 6:05 away from shutting out the Rangers, only to see their two goal lead snapped by Nigel Dawes (off a great feed from Lauri Korpikoski) and Markus Naslund. Once the team got into overtime, they knew they had a chance to come out of the game with two points.
“Boston came in as the hottest team in the league,” Rangers head coach Tom Renney told the team’s website after the victory. “But I think we also showed why we have the record we have, and why we deserve the respect we are getting from around the league.”
In the shootout, Dawes, Fredrik Sjostrom and Nikolai Zherdev were all stopped but then, the captain finally came through and put the team up 1-0, allowing the team’s goaltender Henrik Lundqvist to stop the final shot to give his team the victory.
It was the team’s second straight victory and they will look to keep piling up the points when they take on the Ottawa Senators on Monday night at Madison Square Garden. Hopefully, the Blueshirts won’t look too much into the fact that the Sens’ are coming off back-to-back losses to the New York Islanders.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this game so feel free to comment away!
