Going into this year’s training camp, it would appear that three defensemen are locks to be on the New York Rangers’ roster come October: Marc Staal, Daniel Girardi and Michael Del Zotto. The remaining spots could go to: Michal Rozsival (he’ll be there), Mat Gilroy, Alexei Semenov, Ryan McDonagh, Garnet Exelby and yes, Wade Redden.
Obviously, Redden is on thin ice when it comes to making the team and today, he didn’t do much to increase his chances as he was apparently slow and not able to keep up with his teammates. With that said, however, Redden said head coach John Tortorella told him that he still has a chance to make the team:
“Yeah, that’s what they told me, that’s the way I’m approaching it,” said Redden, who was later asked as to whether worrying about making the team was at the forefront of his thoughts. “It’s another challenge, you leave that to the side, there’s nothing to be done about that. It doesn’t help to dwell on those things. They’re going to make the best decision for the team. I want it to be with me in the first lineup of the year.”
Redden also told team beat reporters that he did not want to dwell on the past, which is something us New Yorkers have trouble doing because we base everything on “What have you done for me lately”, and unfortunately, Redden hasn’t been able to deliver on Broadway thus far.
“I don’t want to go back and dwell on the past,” Redden said. “I want to come in with a clear mind. My focus all year has been coming in fresh and trying to have some fun, do what I can.”
It’s nice that Redden has come into camp with a new outlook and wants to make the team but at the same time, he also understands reality, which is something that Blueshirt fans want him to get wrapped around his head.
“Obviously, I’ve got to come in and play well and show I belong,” said Redden, 33. “I know there are a lot of defensemen in camp, a lot of young guys coming in. Obviously, they’ve got some choices to make. I’ve got to feel good about what I do.”
More than likely, unless he really turns heads in camp, Redden will be sent down to Hartford. That’s just my opinion though.
