If you’re a New York Rangers fan and you watched Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals last night between the Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers, then you certainly enjoyed seeing something you did not see a lot of this season: goals!
Eleven goals were scored last night in front opf a raucous Chicago crowd and while it was run and gun and somewhat ugly hockey, it was extremely entertaining. That word certainly does not describe the Blueshirts.
If you’re GM Glen Sather (sorry), you have to look at the offensive depth these two clubs have and wonder if there is any way to make that happen in NY. Both of these clubs can throw out four lines every night and know that each line has a good chance to put the puck in the net.
Right now at least, the Rangers do not have that.
This is something that Sather needs to fix. The Blueshirts could play run and gun hockey because they have Henrik Lundqvist to make the big stops. However, the one thing they are missing is the most important element: offense.
In last night’s game, it was the wild west at its best. Back and forth hockey, lots of shots, lots of goals. One thing that it did lack, at least on the Philadelphia side and partly on the Chicago side, was the big save. What would the score have been had Henrik Lundqvist been between the pipes for either the Hawks or Flyers? No one really knows but I’m positive that Lundqvist is better than Niemi, Leighton and Boucher.
If the Blueshirts could develop an offense and acquire another sniper or two, they could end up being a very dangerous hockey club because they have the goods in goal and even on defense. We’ll see if Sather can make that happen this off-season.
So, if you’re a Blueshirts fan, watch and admire the way these clubs play and the depth that they have, even if you’re not a fan of them. The Rangers could certainly learn a lot from the both of them.
