When the New York Rangers signed Alex Frolov during the off-season, many pundits and fans wondered if Frolov would be a Nikolai Zherdev-type player.
In pre-season at least, this has not been the case. Frolov is tied for the team lead with five points (1 goal and 4 assists) thus far during pre-season. He has contribtued offensively, has gotten back on defense, has played on the power play and is working extremely hard to prove to the organization and its fans that the signing was not a mistake.
For Frolov, it’s all about consistency. Sure, he’s scoring in the pre-season but will he be able to do it during the regular season? If he goes into it like he’s doing right now, this may turn out to be a great signing for Sather. Surprised, right?
Fedotenko has also been quite the surprise for the Blueshirts. Here on a tryout contract, Fedotenko has also posted five points (1 goal and 4 assists). He’s played well with Sean Avery and Derek Stepan and is making it difficult for head coach John Tortorella to let him go.
Tortorella told the following to Jim Cerny, the team’s web beat writer, after the game:
“Feds flies under the radar, I think,” said Tortorella. “He makes subtle plays and is just a solid guy. He is a guy where I can look down the bench and trust him in any situation.”
Those are some strong words of encouragement from the head coach and if Fedotenko can play that way for the rest of the pre-season, he may just find himself to be a Ranger for the season.
Again, I know it’s pre-season but it’s important for these players to establish patterns of consistency now so that they can carry it into the regualr season and contribute on a daily basis.
