Every Point Matters for the Blueshirts

When it comes to this part of the season, every single point matters to NHL teams that are either in a playoff spot or on the outside looking in.

This is exactly the case when it comes to the New York Rangers. With six total points up for grabs between Monday and Friday, the Blueshirts probably surprised many by picking up five.

The Blueshirts picked-up their fifth point tonight in a 2-1 shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game was nasty and chippy at times but the team found a way to get a point out of it and got three out of a possible four points against the top team in the Eastern Conference.

This is something that the team needs to build on and run with. With newcomers Ryan Clowe, Derick Brassard and John Moore, the Rangers have some new blood in their lineup and with this new lineup, the team has picked up three important points in the standings and did so by playing hard, scoring timely goals and not doing anything stupid to take themselves out of the game.

With tonight's tie, the Rangers move into 7th place in the Eastern Conference with the New York Islanders. The team is now just four points behind the fifth and sixth place teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Ottawa Senators.

Luckily for the Rangers, they get to play the Leafs twice next week. Two wins against them would mean four points in the standings and a potential standings drop for the Leafs.

With that said, the Rangers cannot afford to look that far head. Tomorrow night in Raleigh, NC, the Rangers will take on the 13th place Carolina Hurricanes.

The Hurricanes currently find themselves four points behind the Southeast Division-leading Washington Capitals after being predicted by many to win the division this season. The Rangers were victorious the last time these clubs met back on March 18 as the Blueshirts won in a shootout.

With 11 games left to go on the season, every point the Rangers can get is crucial. In three games this week, the team picked-up five points and should the team win tomorrow, it would be one heck of a week for the team as they would have picked-up a possible seven of eight points.

If the Rangers can take what they have accomplished this week and bring that into Carolina tomorrow night, getting another two points tomorrow night should be a given for the Blueshirts.
