Tonight’s game between the New York Rangers and the New York Islanders was one that the Blueshirts needed to have on home ice.
Mission accomplished. The Blueshirts came out and beat the Islanders by a score of 6-3 and picked up points 77 and 78 on the season.
Believe it or not, the Rangers got three power play goals and a shorthanded goal tonight. Erik Christensen, Bryan McCabe (his first as a Ranger) and Marian Gaborik all connected with the man-advantage while Brandon Prust picked up the shorthanded goal in the first period to give his team a 1-0 lead.
With the win, the Rangers now have sole possession of the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference as the Carolina Hurricanes shutout the Buffalo Sabres by a score of 1-0.
This was a game where the Rangers needed to perform like this. They needed to dominate offensively (outshot the Islanders 47-28), show some toughness and support their goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, who picked up his 29th victory of the season by making 25 saves on 28 shots.
It was certainly nice to see Marian Gaborik score twice tonight as he hit the 20-goal mark. What was great about his two goals was that he showed just how lethal and accurate a shot he has, a shot that he needs to use a lot of down the stretch so he can contribute offensively even more.
Obviously, it was also nice to see the team’s power play connect. They put the puck on net, used the point, set screens in front of the goaltender and did everything else a team’s power play should do.
It’s another one for the win column and a big one at that. With that said, the team must now prepare for two tough games coming up as on Friday night, the team takes on the Montreal Canadiens and on Sunday afternoon, they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Penguins.
If the team can figure out a way to pick up four points in these two games, their playoff picture may become a heckuva lot clearer.
