If you’re from New York and listen to WFAN, chances are is that you know who Joe Benigno is. He’s one of us - a fan who is passionate, knowledgeable and unlike some of us, has his dream job as a sports radio host, something he did not set out to do with his life.
Joe was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to answer a few hockey/Rangers-related questions for us:
PH: How did you first get into hockey
JB: Watching Ranger’s games on Saturday nights with Wynn Elliott on the “Schaeffer Cirlce of Sports.”
PH: Growing up, who was your favorite hockey team/player?
JB: Rangers/ Rod Gilbert
PH: When did you first know that you wanted to work in sports?
JB: Never really thought about it, until I got my shot on The FAN in 1994 on the FAN Appreciation Day Show.
PH: Tell us about how you famously (at least in New York) got a gig at WFAN?
JB: Apparently I won a contest on the show mentioned in question three. I was a long time caller prior to that.
PH: Tell us about your experience working at WFAN. What has it been like for you?
JB: Great, I really don’t feel like I’ve worked the last 15 years.
PH: Now for some actual hockey talk – what happened to our Rangers this season?
JB: 1) Not enough fire power
2) You can’t start the year (7-1) Finish (7-2-1) and play like crap in between
3) Glen Sather
4) Glen Sather
5) Glen Sather
PH: What does the team need to do to improve in the off-season?
JB: 1) Get rid of Tortorella
2) Get rid of Sather
3) Need more legitimate scorers
PH: Does head coach John Tortorella return next season? Why or why not?
JB: He probably does but he should not.
PH: Any words of wisdom for readers of Kukla’s Korner?
JB: If you’re a Rangers fan expect the worst and you’re never dissapointed.
