If you’re an avid NHL Home Ice listener, than you may know the host that I recently completed an e-mail interview with.
His name is Aron Papernick but you may know him as the “Paperboy” from Hockey This Morning. Aaron was kind enough to take time out of his busy schedule to tell us about how he got into hockey, how he got his gig at NHL Home Ice as well as his predictions regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs.
PH: How did you get into hockey?
AP: All Torontonians are born watching the Toronto Maple Leafs. Whether that counts as “hockey” is debatable. I grew up watching the Leafs in Harold Ballard’s horrible 80s when the only good thing on the ice was Wendel Clark’s moustache.
PH: Growing up, who was your favorite team/player?
AP: I’ve always looked up to the Leafs’ recent captains and held them in high regard as my favourite player: Wendel Clark, Doug Gilmour, and Mats Sundin. All three led the team with grit, heart, skill, emotion, and as best a playoff performance as they could muster.
PH: At what point did you know that you wanted to work in hockey?
AP: I wanted to work in radio before I was finished high school, though not specifically in sports radio. Some friends & I had a youth affairs call-in talk show on a local university radio station while we were still in high school.
PH: What outlets have you covered hockey for?
AP: I previously worked at the Toronto Maple Leafs’ radio partner AM640 Toronto Radio.
PH: How did your current gig at NHL Home Ice?
AP: I received a phone call and a mysterious invitation to lunch. Initially I didn’t meet our boss Joe Thistel. Maybe that was so I would accept the offer.
PH: What shows at NHL Home Ice are you involved with?
AP: I am the full-time Technical Producer and Music Director of Hockey This Morning. Over the years, I’ve done some work for pretty much every show we have.
PH: What is it like working with Shawn Lavigne and Mike Ross every single morning?
AP: Next question.
PH: How about some hockey talk – What are your thoughts on the season so far? Any early predictions you want to throw at us?
AP: The Leafs won’t make the playoffs, and neither will my other pick, the Sharks.
PH: Any words of wisdom for Kukla’s Korner readers?
AP: Try to take off your (insert favourite team name here) glasses and look at the game without bias. It’s a great game, and there are great players and plays in different cities every night. Being a fan is great, being narrow-minded is stupid. Enjoy the NHL, it’s a diversion from the drudgery of everyday life, right???
