An E-mail Interview with Hockey Writer/Blogger Greg Thomson

This evening, I was lucky enough to do an e-mail interview you with Greg Thomson, a hockey blogger/writer for Leafs Nation Online, Inside Hockey, True Hockey, and The Hockey Writers.

Greg was kind enough to tell us about how he got into hockey, how he got into covering hockey as well as his thoughts on the future of blogging.

PH How did you get into hockey?:
GT: Growing up, I tuned into Hockey Night in Canada every Saturday and watched my heroes take to the ice. I spent a lot of time at the rink, whether it was playing, coaching, refing or simply watching various levels of hockey. My original love for the game began after taking in OHL hockey as a kid growing up in Ontario.

PH: Growing up, who was your favorite team/player? Why?
GT: I grew up religiously following the Toronto Maple Leafs, although I have always kept an eye on other teams around the league. I claim to have a favourite player, but I enjoy watching Luke Schenn.

PH: At what point in your life did you know you wanted to be a hockey writer/blogger?
GT: Hockey has always been a big part of my life in some form, but the idea of becoming a writer came to fruition only a few years ago. I have been covering the Leafs for several online publications since 2007 and have continued to harvest my passion for the game of hockey. I hope to leverage my work into more established writing positions in the future.

PH: What outlets are you covering the game for now?
GT: I currently cover the Toronto Maple Leafs for Leafs Nation Online, which I founded in August, and Inside Hockey. Along with my responsibilities at those outlets, I am also a contributing writer for True Hockey and The Hockey Writers, where I write regular NHL and CHL-related articles.

PH: What are your various responsibilities at these blogs/outlets?
GT: For Leafs Nation Online and Inside Hockey, I write Leaf-related game previews, recaps and opinionated articles. Most of my prospect reports and junior hockey talk can be viewed at True Hockey and The Hockey Writers.

PH: What are you looking to provide readers at the various outlets you write/blog for?
GT: My goal is to keep the readers up-to-date with the latest news and insight on their favourite team. I also want to provide fans with a look at the upcoming prospects from junior hockey and what the future looks like for the NHL.

PH: How do you think hockey blogs/media outlets will grow in the future?
GT: I think blogs will continue to garner popularity and become one of the primary sources for news and discussion amongst fans. The use of Twitter has also helped writers gain attention and readership.

PH: Anything else you’d like to share with readers of Kukla’s Korner?
GT: If you are interested in contacting me or reading my work, please visit http://www.leafsnationonline.com and follow me on Twitter @Greg_Thomson.
