An E-mail Interview with Columbus Blue Jackets Prospect Cameron Atkinson

It was an honor to conduct an e-mail interview with this sixth round pick of the Columbus Blue Jackets back in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Cameron Atkinson was kind enough to take time out of his very busy summer training schedule to tell us about how he got into hockey, what it was like to be drafted, what he wants to do with Blue Jackets and more.

PH: How did you get into hockey?
CA: I started playing hockey because of my dad, who was born and raised in Vancouver. It was innevitable that I would play at some point and when I did at age two, I did not look back.

PH: Growing up, who was your favorite team/player? Why?
CA: Growing up, the New York Rangers were my favorite team but, Marty St. Louis was my favorite player because he is small and has what it takes to be an impact player and one of the best players in the NHL.

PH: At what point in your life did you know that you wanted to try and become a professional hockey player?
CA: I would always joke around at such a young age that I wanted to be a professional hockey player because you get to do what you love as your job. When I was in high school, I knew I wanted to be a pro.

PH: What was it like to be drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft?
CA: It was a dream come true to be drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets. They were a team while during my draft year that did not think were interested in me. When they called my name, I could not have been any happier.

PH: When you were drafted, what did the Blue Jackets tell you to do regarding being prepared as a professional athlete?
CA: They knew that my decision was to go to Boston College for however long it took for me to mature as a person and player. They respected that decision and did not want to interfere.

PH: What has it been like playing college hockey at Boston College?
CA: I would not have wanted to go to any other school besides Boston College. I met some of the greatest people that I will forever remain friends with. To play for coaches like Jerry York with such tradition was truly amazing.

PH: What has been your favorite experience with the BC Eagles?
CA: Winning a National Championship.

PH: What are you hoping to accomplish in training camp this season?
CA: I am hoping to play my game and just take it one day at a time but treat it like it’s a Game 7.

Love this guy’s attitude. Hope we see him on the ice in a Jackets jersey next year.
