Those two words describe New York Rangers’ goaltender Henrik Lundqvist’s play as a Blueshirt since joining the National Hockey League in the 2005-06 season.
He showed that once again last night with a 40-save shutout performance of the Vancouver Canucks, helping lead the Rangers to their first victory of the season. It only made sense that he was the story of the game because since joining the league, he has been the franchises’s best player.
In last night’s 4-0 win, Lundqvist was calm, cool, and collected under pressure. He did a solid job of controlling rebounds, challenging shooters and making himself look big to some of the league’s best shooters in Henrik and Daniel Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows, Sami Salo and many others on the Canucks.
Going into the game, the Rangers knew they needed someone to lead them to a victory. Many fans probably thought it would be the team’s top line of Marian Gaborik-Brad Richards-Derek Stepan but it was Lundqvist who again rescued the team.
With that said, it was nice to see the Blueshirts erupt for four goals in the third period. Michael Rupp, Ryan McDonagh, Brian Boyle and Marian Gaborik all scored in the final frame to help Lundqvist out, which Henrik probably appreciated more than anyone on the club.
As a whole, the Rangers will need to be a lot better when they face the Calgary Flames tomorrow night. The team continues to take undisciplined penalties (gave the Canucks 8 power plays last night) so the team will have to continue to work on that.
Other than that, the Rangers now stand at 1-1-2 in this very young season. Still a long ways to go so hopefully, the Blueshirts’ will continue to build on a winning path for themselves.
One player that will have a lot to do with that this season will undoubtedly be the “King”, Henrik Lundqvist.
