Well wasn’t that just a culmination of hockey greatness? 4 games, 1 point. The Good Ship Feaster has sent out the S.O.S. to the Coast Guard ‘cause it’s taking on water, and fast. But then again, the great fans of Calgary will simply wait for the reinforcements and get back in their battle gear for their match at the ‘dome on Saturday vs. Minny. The Flames blew their proverbial load as they came out of the gate with an early 3-0 lead against Ottawa (no pun intended). Sadly, they went limp from that point on.
The Senatards of Ottawa came back and beat the Flames with 4 straight goals, and an overtime winner. The Nashville Predators played an inept Flames squad that made it look close in the 3rd. 5-3 Preds. Washington played evil host and our guys succumbed 3-1. Bonus points go to Rene Bourque for getting 5 games for a Gordie Howe elbow to Nic Backstrom’s button. The road trip meandered its way to Boston, and the spirits of the team were at an all time low, only to be lowered soon. Leland Irving was given the start, and was left beaten like a red headed stepchild. Editor’s Note: Kick a Ginger Day should be outlawed. The Bostonian Bruins kicked 3 field goals and shut out their violated guests 9-0. Pee-U. What a stinker. Let’s move on.
The Flambeau sir 18-19-5 and 5 points out of a playoff spot. If the competition was to see who would play the most games, then Calgary would be in 1st. Unfortunately that will only hurt them in the playoff-seeking days of March and April. As mentioned before, Rene Bourque was given a 5 game hiatus and his wages will go towards the retire players fund, or the World Wildlife Fund. I’d prefer it goes to the jackasses that keep calling to say they need me to check my computer and give them my credit card number. Get me some seperation from these English starved tele-scavengers. Raitis Ivanans and his glorious history in the Flamed crest- was recalled to add something. It remains to be seen if further seasoning will make the Latvian Lout an asset for the team. Perhaps we had our answer as the big club acquired Blair Jones from TBay for Brenden Mikkelson today. I would hazard a guess Mr. Ivanans may have to clear waivers again to get back with his successful mates in Abbotsford. Let’s hope he gets a chance to play with another NHL team and gets claimed this time around; he deserves it.
Jarome’s 500th goal will have to wait. Hopefully it doesn’t come on the heals of a 6 or 7 goal deficit. It will be a special moment and it would have been hard for the teammates to feign happiness if he would have sniped a meaningless goal in Boston yesterday. We can only hope the team gets hot, and soon. Again the masses seem to think that trades are in the answer…..I disagree. Love is indeed the answer. If that doesn’t work then resort to booze my friends!
Don’t dwell on the past,
P.S. If you see Chris Butler or Jay-Bo at Morgan’s Pub in the near future, don’t remind them of their -7, and -5 results versus the Beantowners. Let’s keep that quiet…
