Playoff Pools: Rate My Team

Just like tax season and the Leafs missing the playoffs, springtime in Canada is all about hockey pools. So whenever I receive an invite to one, I jump at the chance.

The following is my entry to a hockey pool at my wife’s work. For a mere 20 dollars, I pick any 20 players from any of the 16 playoff teams. The league uses a very simple scoring system - goals and assists - which is why you won’t see any goalies or even defensemen. This entry required approximately a half hour of thought, which is about the time I put into last year’s team, which won first place in a league of about ten contestants.

At the very least, you’ll get an idea of which teams I think will make it to the second round, based on my selections. Who did I miss? Who should I not have included? Feel free to provide feedback, and I might explain my selections and strategy.

Sidney Crosby - PIT
Evgeni Malkin - PIT
James Neal - PIT
Claude Giroux - PHI
Marian Gaborik - NYR
Brad Richards - NYR
Tyler Seguin - BOS
Milan Lucic – BOS
David Krejci - BOS
Ilya Kovalchuk - NJ
Henrik Sedin - VAN
Alex Burrows - VAN
Ryan Kesler - VAN
Pavel Datsyuk - DET
Henrik Zetterberg - DET
Johan Franzen - DET
Patrick Kane - CHI
Patrick Sharp - CHI
Marian Hossa – CHI
Joe Thornton – SJ

Well - Ottawa’s going to upset New York, so clearly you should be picking Spezza and Karlsson over Gaborik and Richards!

Chretien: I have to go with my head on the OTT/NYR series.

However, I’ll be pulling for your Sens in that series to pull the upset! I don’t necessarily cheer for teams because they are Canadian, but I will pull for the Senators (except if they were to face the Canucks in the finals, of course).

Make me regret not picking Spezza and Karlsson!

About The Goods on Fantasy Hockey

My name is Ian Gooding, and this is The Goods on Fantasy Hockey. Given my ability to understand numbers, write sentences, and follow hockey, it’s not a surprise to those who know me that I became a fantasy hockey writer. I started writing about fantasy hockey in 2006 for fantasyhockey.com and became the site’s content editor in 2007. Looking to expand my audience, I joined Kukla’s Korner in the summer of 2011 to create the site’s first fantasy hockey blog.

A few times each week, I’ll provide an article called “Pick Six” where I will write about six players that should either be in your fantasy team’s starting lineup or bench for the upcoming game. As well, I’ll provide the fantasy takes on important hockey developments. You can also email me your questions or comments to gooding74@shaw.ca, or follow me on Twitter.
