Pick Six: Saturday October 8

Saturday has been hockey night for all of us as long as we can remember. So it seems fitting that this Saturday represents the first busy day of the season. Busier days mean that roster decisions become that more important – something you’ll attest to if you’ve ever seen a player rack up a huge statline while sitting on your bench. My job will be to try to help you avoid that embarrassment and to exploit the possible matchups that may be out there.

Cue the Hockey Night in Canada theme… here’s the Pick Six for Saturday. There’s lots to choose from, but these six players from my various fantasy hockey rosters seemed to catch my attention.

Pick Six: Thursday October 6

It’s officially go time in fantasy hockey leagues, which means it’s time for our first Pick Six of the season. A new feature at Kukla’s Korner, the Pick Six will list six players of interest that you should know about as you set your fantasy lineup. Players listed will be worth a start or a sit because of hot/cold play, injuries, matchups, favorable line combinations, or just because they are in the news for whatever reason. But more than anything else, I will provide a fantasy hockey take on whatever I write, which I hope will make this article both interesting and informative.

Drum roll, please… my Pick Six for Thursday will include one player from each of the teams in action on Opening Night.

Fantasyhockey.com Kukla’s Korner Draft Results

On Sunday evening, 16 of the greatest minds in fantasy hockey (or so we pretend to be) gathered in front of their computers for the first ever fantasyhockey.com/Kuklas Korner League fantasy hockey live draft.

First Draft of the Year

My first single-season league draft of the season came and went on Sunday, and I wasn’t a participant. (Okay, my alibi was that I promised to go to Costco and also take my two-year-old son out on his tricycle during the time of my draft – pretty lame, I know.)  In spite of my domestic responsibilities, I do plan on attending at least one live draft this season, which will likely be the fantasyhockey.com/Kukla’s Korner League, where I am the commissioner.

Bring on the Busts

The players that I’ve listed as busts aren’t necessarily players you shouldn’t draft (okay, but some of them are). These players are mainly the type that are on the downside of their career, or are players that won’t perform at the level at which they are likely to be drafted this season. Injuries are a risk that any NHL player faces, but fantasy hockey veterans will know by now that some players seem to spend more time on IR than on active rosters (sadly, I forgot to include Rick DiPietro on my list). Whatever the reason, these are players that you should exercise caution before drafting this season.

Sizing Up the Sleepers

In order to win a fantasy league, it’s not the early-round picks that matter (unless you choose Sidney Crosby and he misses half the season). The difference between winning and losing a fantasy league lies in making savvy mid to late round picks whose production level matches that of earlier-round picks.

With that strategy in mind, I’ve listed twelve players that I believe have the potential to exceed their current ranking on Yahoo, ESPN, CBS, or any other sites that host fantasy hockey. I’m not suggesting that you draft all of these players. But timing is everything, so these are names that you can consider if they appear at the right spot for you. I no longer enter drafts thinking that I must draft a particular player, since I could end up drafting the player earlier than I need to. Rather, I ensure that the player fills a particular need on my team (positional, statistical) before I add to my roster. Understanding player values is a critical component in winning any fantasy league – whether it be hockey, baseball, football, or fishing (yes, there is such a thing).

About The Goods on Fantasy Hockey

My name is Ian Gooding, and this is The Goods on Fantasy Hockey. Given my ability to understand numbers, write sentences, and follow hockey, it’s not a surprise to those who know me that I became a fantasy hockey writer. I started writing about fantasy hockey in 2006 for fantasyhockey.com and became the site’s content editor in 2007. Looking to expand my audience, I joined Kukla’s Korner in the summer of 2011 to create the site’s first fantasy hockey blog.

A few times each week, I’ll provide an article called “Pick Six” where I will write about six players that should either be in your fantasy team’s starting lineup or bench for the upcoming game. As well, I’ll provide the fantasy takes on important hockey developments. You can also email me your questions or comments to gooding74@shaw.ca, or follow me on Twitter.
